BOXSCORE NORTHFIELD, Minn. --
Chris Student (JR, Edina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret HS) scored his first collegiate goal and his first in an Augsburg College uniform on Friday night, but the Auggies allowed three St. Olaf College goals in the second period, as the Oles claimed a 4-1 victory in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game at the Northfield Ice Arena.
Student, who played his first season at Northeastern (Mass.) and his sophomore campaign at Minnesota before transferring to Augsburg (5-12-3 overall, 3-6-2 MIAC), tied Friday's game for the Auggies with a power-play goal at the 18:49 mark of the first period, assisted by
Tom Kuhn (FY, Hastings, Minn.) and
Thomas Paine (SO, Superior, Wis./Duluth (Minn.) Marshall HS).
But St. Olaf (10-8-2 overall, 9-2-0 MIAC) took the lead back with three second-period goals. Jeff Harris scored two goals for the Oles, while David Rath had a goal and an assist, Kevin Harris and Dan Cecka had two assists each, and Ross Trousdale scored the other Ole goal.
Jeff Harris opened the scoring for the Oles with a goal from Cecka and Kevin Harris at the 7:45 mark of the first period, then gave the Oles the lead with a power-play goal from Kevin Harris and Cecka at the 4:35 mark of the second period. Trousdale scored from Mark Rath and David Rath at the 13:27 mark, and David Rath scored from Tim Tuscher at the 18:21 mark.
Augsburg outshot St. Olaf by a 36-26 margin.
John Bretzman (SO, Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS), making his second straight start in goal for the Auggies, had 22 saves, while Henrik Wood had 35 saves in goal for the Oles.
Student and Paine had six shots on-goal for Augsburg, while
Mack Ohnsted (FY, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS) had four shots and
Carl Krieger (FY, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) had three shots.
The teams return to action with the second game of the series on Saturday (2/2) at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
