Berthold scores twice in Augsburg 3-1 victory

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Erica Berthold (SR, Issaquah, Wash.) claimed her third career multi-goal game, scoring twice as Augsburg College collected a 3-1 victory over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey contest on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Jessica Larkin (SR, Lakeville, Min./Lakeville South HS) scored a goal and assisted on both of Berthold's goals, and Brianna Schulz (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) collected 41 saves in goal for Augsburg (6-10-2 overall, 2-7-2 MIAC), which has equaled its win total from last season (6-11-8) with seven games remaining in the campaign.

Augsburg claimed the victory despite being outshot by a 42-23 margin, including an 18-2 margin in the second period. But Schulz came through with her ninth game recording 30-plus saves -- and her fourth game with 40-plus saves -- this season, stopping all but one shot she faced. The Auggies also withstood a five-minute power play following a major penalty in the second period and the Oles playing with an empty net and extra attacker for 4:39 late in the third period.

Berthold opened the scoring for the Auggies at the 12:00 mark of the first period, assisted by Larkin and Claire Cripps (FY, Hutchinson, Minn.).

The Oles tied the game with a goal from Alana Patrick (JR, Mendota Heights, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS), assisted by Nicole Stumpf (SR, Oakdale, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) and Alison Umland (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS), at the 6:42 mark of the second period. But 50 seconds later, Augsburg took the lead back, as Berthold scored her fifth goal of the season, assisted by Larkin.

Larkin finished the scoring for the Auggies with a goal from Casey Miller (SO, Bemidji, Minn.) at the 12:47 mark of the third period.

The teams finish the weekend series on Saturday (2/2) at 7:30 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
