Kornbaum and Veach lead Auggies to victory over SMU

BOXSCORE WINONA, Minn. -- Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) and Noah Veach (JR, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) teammed up to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 71-60 victory over Saint Mary's University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at SMU field house. With the win, the Auggies move to 19-6 overall (14-6 MIAC) and earn the right to host St. John's University in a first round MIAC playoff game on Wednesday (2/20).

Kornbaum scored a game-high 19 points and added eight rebounds, while recording three blocked shots. Veach posted his second double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for Augsburg was Tyler Schmidt (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) and Andy Seidlitz (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS). Schmidt finished with 12 points and three assists, while Seidlitz posted 11 points and five rebounds.

St. Mary's finished with three players in double-figures, led by Michael Burfeind, who posted 17 points and added two steals.

After trailing 35-29 at the half, Augsburg went on to outscore the Cardinals 42-25 in the final 20 minutes. After St. Mary's grabbed the opening bucket of the second-half, Augsburg went on a 12-3 run and grabbed a 41-40 lead off a dunk by Kornbaum at the 14:38 mark. Augsburg was able to stretch its lead to as many as 17 before going on to claim the 71-60 victory.

For the game, Augsburg shot 49.0 percent (24-of-49) from the field, while St. Mary's connected on 45.8 percent (22-of-48) of its shots. The Auggies posted a 31-28 advantage on the boards and were able turn 11 St. Mary's turnovers into 21 points.

Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (2/20) when it hosts St. John's University in a MIAC quarterfinal playoff game. The Auggies will be going for their first 20-win campaign under coach Griess' tenure and its first 20-win season since the Auggies 1998-99 MIAC championship season.
