Auggies shoot the lights out in 106-87 win over St. John's

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team finished with six players in double figures and shot a season-high 68.0 percent (34-of-50) from the field to claim a 106-87 victory over St. John's University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at Si Melby Hall.

The game marked the first time the Auggies have offensively reached the century mark, since a 100-71 win over Crown College to open the 2006-07 season (Nov. 21). With the win the Auggies move to 16-5 overall (11-5 MIAC), while the Johnnies fall to 10-11 overall (9-7 MIAC). Augsburg now sits a half game back from Concordia College with four games remaining for the Auggies, while the Cobbers have three games remaining in the regular season.

Augsburg was led offensively by Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS), who finished with 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the floor, while adding a career-high six assists. Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) and Tyler Schmidt  (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) finished with 17 points apiece. Schmidt had a perfect night -- 4-for-4 from the floor, 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and 6-for-6 from the free throw line, while adding three assists. Hines also had a perfect night from the charity stripe, hitting 8-of-8, while adding six assists and three rebounds.

Also finishing in double figures for the Auggies was Brett Rasmussen (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), who finished with 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Noah Veach (JR Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) posted 12 points and five boards and Andy Seidlitz (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) chipped in 10 points and two boards.

St. John's was led by Seth Marx, who posted the only double-double of the evening finishing with 28 points and 10 rebounds.

The Johnnies grabbed the opening bucket of the night and led until Augsburg's Hines was able to connect on two 3-pointers in a minute-and-a-half span, giving Augsburg a 13-12 lead at the 15:54 mark. St. John's tied things up at 15-15 but Augsburg's Veach converted on a lay-up on the Auggies next possession, which turned out to be a lead the Auggies wouldn't give up. Augsburg led 48-41 at the intermission and only shot better in the second-half. In the final 10 minutes of action, the Auggies converted on 22-of-24 from the charity stripe to earn the important MIAC victory over St. John's.

For the game, Augsburg shot a season-high 68.0 percent, including 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from beyond the arc, while the Johnnies hit 48.5 percent (32-of-66) of their shots. St. John's grabbed a 30-27 advantage on the boards but the Auggies were able to outscore the Johnnies 44-32 in points in the paint and were able to convert on 31-of-39 from the free throw line, while St. John's was only able to capitalize on 14-of-19.

Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (2/6), when the Auggies travel to Northfield to take on Carleton College in another important MIAC game with playoff implications. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
