Augsburg falls to St. Ben's

BOXSCORE ST. JOSEPH, Minn. -- The Augsburg College women's basketball team dropped an 88-55 contest to the College of St. Benedict in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at Claire Lynch Hall. With the loss, the Auggies fall to 7-14 overall (5-13 MIAC), while the Blazers move to 16-4 overall (15-3 MIAC).

Augsburg was led by the duo of Jill Tichy (JR, Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) and Jolene Blood (JR, Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS). Tichy finished with 14 points and six rebounds, which included a perfect 6-of-6 night at the free throw line. Blood also posted 14 points on the night, while adding five rebounds and three steals.

Saint Benedict had 18 players record playing time in the contest, led by Whitney Canton, who finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while adding four assists and a steal.

The Blazers started the contest on a 12-0 run but Augsburg was able to counter with a 7-0 run of its own to pull the score to 12-7 at the 13:33 mark. St. Ben's extended its lead to double digits before the Auggies were able to string together another 7-0 run to pull the score within 41-32. The Blazers were able to convert on an and-one with three seconds to play in the half to take a 44-32 lead into the locker room at the intermission. The Auggies couldn't keep up with the hot-shooting Blazers in the second-half as St. Benedict pulled away for the win over Augsburg.

For the game, Augsburg shot 30.8 percent (20-of-65) from the field, while the Blazers connected on 50.9 percent (27-of-53) of their shots. St. Benedict claimed a 43-37 advantage on the boards. The Auggies were able to outscore the Blazers 30-24 in points in the paint but were outscored 40-12 in bench scoring as St. Ben's displayed its depth.

Augsburg will attempt to get back in the win column on Wednesday (2/6) when the Auggies play host to Carleton Colege in a battle of two team tied in the MIAC standings (5-11 MIAC).
