Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) posted his sixth double-double of the season to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team but it wasn't enough as the Auggies dropped a 63-58 contest to Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at West Gymnasium.
Augsburg (16-6 overall, 11-6 MIAC) was led offensively by Kornbaum, who finished with 21 points and 14 boards, while shooting 9-of-17 from the field. Also finishing in double-figures for the Auggies was
Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS), who posted 12 points and 6 rebounds, while shooting 5-of-10 from the floor.
Carleton was led by Shane McSparron, who recorded a 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting.
The two teams were tied 17-17 at the midway point of the first-half but Carleton put together an 11-2 run to take a 28-19 advantage at the 7:38 mark. The teams traded baskets for the final seven minutes of the half and the Knights took a 40-30 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Augsburg started the second-half on an 8-2 run and was able to cut the Carleton lead to 46-43 after a 3-pointer by Hines at the 11:58 mark. The Knights were able to grow their lead to as many as nine before the Auggies could cut the lead back down to 59-54 with 41 seconds left in the action. Carleton was able to hit 4-of-6 from the free throw line to put a halt to the Augsburg comeback as the knights hung on for the 63-58 win.
For the game, Augsburg shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58), while the Knights hit 43.6 percent (24-of-55) of their shots. The Auggies claimed a narrow 35-34 advantage on the boards but the Auggies were only able to convert on 6-of-13 from the free throw line, while Carleton hit 12-of-16.
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (2/9) when it hosts St. Olaf College in a men's and women's double-header at Si Melby Hall. The women's action begins at 1 p.m., while the men tip-off at 3 p.m.
