Auggies sweep Royals, edge closer in playoff race

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Andrew Allen (FY, Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley HS) scored a goal and added an assist, leading Augsburg College to a 4-1, come-from-behind victory over Bethel University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

With the win, Augsburg's fifth in its last six games, the Auggies continued to advance in the race for a spot in the MIAC's five-team postseason playoffs. With the sweep of the Royals (7-16-0 overall, 6-8-0 MIAC), the Auggies (8-12-3 overall, 6-6-2 MIAC) vaulted into sixth place in the MIAC standings with 14 points, with only a conference series against St. Thomas remaining in the regular season. Augsburg stands two points behind Gustavus and Concordia-Moorhead, which are tied for fourth place with 16 points. Gustavus takes on league-leader St. Olaf (18 points) next weekend, while Concordia takes on seventh-place St. Mary's. St. John's and St. Thomas are tied for second place in the league standings with 17 points.

After giving up a first-period goal, the Auggies responded with four straight goals to claim the victory, outscoring the Royals by a 13-5 margin in the weekend series. Over its last eight games (5-1-2), Augsburg has outscored its opponents by a 28-16 margin.

Allen scored his fifth goal of the season at the 13:13 mark of the second period, a power-play goal from Mack Ohnsted (FY, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS) and Derek Loisel (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.). The Auggies took the lead 3:53 later, when #B.J. McClellan# (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored from Loisel.

The Auggies added two insurance goals in the third period. Tim Serratore (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek HS) scored from Daniel Hildebrandt (SO, Monument, Colo./Pine Creek HS) and Ben McClellan (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) at the 6:10 mark, and Carl Krieger (FY, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) capped the game with an empty-net goal from Allen with 31 seconds to play.

Bethel's lone goal came at the 7:07 mark of the first period, as Mitch Hughes (FY, Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) scored form Jack Paul (SR, Minnetonka, Minn.).

Augsburg outshot Bethel by a 34-18 margin. Auggie goalie Justin Lochner (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) collected 17 saves in the victory, while Bethel goalie Steven Bolton (FY, Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) had 30 saves in a losing effort.

Augsburg travels to face St. Thomas on Thursday (2/14) at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn., and host the Tommies next Saturday (2/16) at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink. Bethel faces St. John's in a weekend series, hosting the Johnnies on Friday (2/15) at 7 p.m. and traveling to face the Johnnies on Saturday at 7 p.m.
