BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS --
Grant Griffin (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) scored on a service by
Lekpea Kordah (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) in the 53rd minute, as the Augsburg College men's soccer team claimed a 1-1, two-overtime tie with visiting Wartburg College (Iowa) in a nonconference contest on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
The Auggies (1-0-1 overall) rallied back from a first-half 1-0 deficit to claim the tie. Kordah made a solid service of a ball from the end line across the box, and Griffin was able to deposit the ball in the net for his first goal of the season.Â
Saturday's marathon game included a one-hour, 19-minute delay due to lightning from a storm that swept through the Twin Cities just before the start of the second half.
The Auggies had two shots hit the crossbar and another hit the goalpost in the second half.
"This was a challenging night for both teams, having played overtime matches the night prior, and then dealing with the extended weather delay," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "Our guys showed good character again in finding the equalizer and getting a point out of the game. That being said, I think we all feel we should have left with three points after really pouring it on in the second half. Their goalkeeper made some key saves as he tipped 3-4 over the bar. I thought
Edi Becerra's (JR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Minneapolis Southwest HS) shot won it for us when it hit underside of the bar and it bounced down, but goal line technology hasn't quite reached our level."
Wartburg (1-0-1 overall) scored in the 25th minute, as Dan Nadeau (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored on a feed from Zubeen Azari (SO, Spirit Lake, Iowa/Spirit Lake Park HS).Â
Augsburg outshot Wartburg by a 12-10 margin in the first half, then claimed an advantage in the run of play the rest of the way. Augsburg outshot Wartburg 16-4 the remainder of the game, including an 11-3 advantage in the second half and a 5-1 advantage in the two overtime periods, to claim a 28-14 game shots edge. Augsburg also had 10 corner kicks to Wartburg's five.
Clayton Lynch (SR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) had two saves in goal for the Auggies, while Zak Kohlmeyer (JR, Waterloo, Iowa/West HS) had seven saves in goal for Wartburg.
Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (9/4) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Wisconsin-Superior at Edor Nelson Field.
"We get a day off tomorrow before we start preparing for UW-Superior, who earned a 1-1 draw with Loras tonight," Holker said. "They are an excellent team -- big, fast, powerful -- and we have had some really good games with them recently. We will have to be sharper than we were this weekend to get points in that contest."
