WINONA, Minn. -- Danny Osip (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) netted the game-winning goal 2:55 into the second overtime, giving the Augsburg College men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Saint Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Wednesday evening at Ochrymowycz Field.
Osip scored the game-winner following a free kick by Scott Clinton (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) for the Auggies, who improved to 5-1-1 overall, 1-0-0 in MIAC play. Saint Mary's dropped to 3-2-1 overall, 0-1-0 in MIAC play. Augsburg entered the game ranked No. 21 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III national rankings.
"Such a great night for Danny Osip. He makes his return in the center of the back four and puts his stamp on our season with a massive goal from Clinton's free kick," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "Lekpea Kordah (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) did well to beat two St. Mary's players before getting fouled on the right edge of the box, and Scott knew exactly who to find. Danny just climbed the ladder and hammered his header into the floor and up into the underside of the top netting."
Augsburg outshot Saint Mary's by a 17-4 margin in the game. Clayton Lynch (SR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) had one save in goal for Augsburg, while Joey Petrich had three saves for Saint Mary's.
"For as sloppy as we started, we definitely improved as the game wore on. We had numerous chances in the second half but were weren't on target, which led to some stress at the end. However, this team finds ways to win," Holker said.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (9/21) at 1 p.m., with a game at Bethel University.
"Now the challenge is to own the game from the opening whistle," Holker said. "Bethel will be another great test. They are a well organized team that has a plan and the players to carry it out. They are very well coached and I expect it to be a much different matchup than the last two games we've played."
