Auggies fall 2-1 at Bethel

BOXSCORE ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- Lekpea Kordah (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) scored the lone goal of the game for Augsburg College in the 88th minute, but it wasn't enough for the visitors, as Bethel University scored a 2-1 win in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer contest on Saturday afternoon at Ona North Field.

Matthew Pisarski scored from Luke Chase in the 12th minute, and Danny Jaderholm scored from Cody Walkup in the 79th minute for Bethel (3-3-0 overall, 1-1-0 MIAC), which was outshot by Augsburg (5-2-1 overall, 1-1-0 MIAC) by a 12-8 margin. Augsburg entered the game ranked No. 21 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III national poll.

"Bethel deserved three points today. They outworked us from the very beginning of the game," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "Their first goal came on a set piece and we know well enough what our assignments are, but failed to be mentally sharp and track runners into the box. This league is decided by those moments -- on both sides of the ball."

Kordah's goal came on an assist from Bobby Kohl (FY, Shorewood, Wis.) and Scott Clinton (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS). Clinton had three shots to lead the Auggies in the category in the contest.

Clayton Lynch (SR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) had five saves in goal for the Auggies, while A.J. Syler had six saves for Bethel.

"Clayton Lynch kept the score respectable for us because it could have been much worse. He was fantastic in stifling their chances," Holker said.

Augsburg returns to action next Saturday (9/28) at 7 p.m., with a contest at Macalester.

"That was definitely a missed opportunity for us," Holker said. "How we respond will determine a lot. It's a tough league. Every team can take points from the supposed favorite -- and they will."
