BOXSCORE ST. PAUL, Minn. --
Lekpea Kordah (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) and
Bobby Kohl (FY, Shorewood, Wis.) scored goals in a 2:53 span in the first half, and the lead held up for the Augsburg College men's soccer team in a 2-1 win over host Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday evening at Macalester Stadium.
Kordah opened the scoring with a goal from
Danny Osip (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) at the 34:50 mark, and Kohl followed with a penalty kick goal at the 37:43 mark. Augsburg (6-2-1 overall, 2-1-0 MIAC) outshot Macalester (5-4-1 overall, 1-1-1 MIAC) by a 9-1 margin in the first half.
"We were pretty sharp in the first half and the stats support that.
Danny Osip played very well on the night and his ball behind their backs led to Lekpea's goal. Lekpea just showed his desire to get their first -- and his pace -- as he beat their goalkeeper to the ball before calmly tapping it into an empty goal," said Augsburg coach
Greg Holker. "
Tanner McCarthy (JR, Windsor Heights, Iowa/Dowling Catholic HS) and Lekpea then did well to set
John Leyva (FY, San Jacinto, Calif.) alone six yards out before he was clattered into for the penalty. Heading into the break up 2-0 was tremendous because Macalester hasn't conceded many goals recently."
The Auggies surrendered a penalty kick goal by Macalester's Robin Forslund with 2:46 left in the second half, but withstood a Macalester lineup that outshot the Auggies by a 10-3 margin in the second stanza.
Clayton Lynch (SR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) claimed three saves in goal to score the win for Augsburg, while Noah Schoenberg had two saves in goal for the Scots.
"In the second half, Lynch stood on his head and kept us alive. We were a bit naive in playing forward without a real purpose and overcommitting on their players, either leading to a breakdown or a free kick. I feel like they had a dozen set pieces in the second half and they are very good on those. The energy we brought had good intentions, but we just got ambitious and fouled way too much." Holker said. "Their PK came from a chaotic moment in front of goal off of a long free kick. The official called a handball in the mess of bodies, and Forslund finished it well."
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (10/2) at 4 p.m., hosting Concordia-Moorhead at Edor Nelson Field. Augsburg coach Holker will be in pursuit of his 100th career coaching victory in the game against the Cobbers; he is now 99-59-22 in his 10 seasons at Augsburg.
"Overall, these were important points in the MIAC race -- and important for us to take after the performance at Bethel last weekend. Moving forward, we have to find ways to be better in possession and break down a very organized Concordia team on Wednesday," Holker said.Â
