Auggies rally in 2nd half for win over Yellowjackets

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Ben Henry (FY, Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln HS) scored two second-half goals, as his Augsburg College men's soccer team rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit for a 3-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Superior in a nonconference contest on Wednesday night at Edor Nelson Field.

Trailing 1-0 after a Yellowjacket goal in the 15th minute, the Auggies reversed course in the second half, outshooting the visitors by a 14-4 margin in the period, en route to the victory. Augsburg (2-0-1 overall) has had to rally from a deficit in each of its three contests so far this season.

"I don't want to get in the habit of starting the game down a goal moving forward, but it is certainly important that our guys continue to show resilience in coming back at this stage," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "This is a young team, and we need some more time to refine some detail, but overall I am extremely pleased with their effort and competitiveness."

Henry scored his first goal of the game in the 49th minute, finishing a solid three-way passing play. Midfielder Edi Becerra (JR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Minneapolis Southwest HS) found Lekpea Kordah (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) on the right wing. Kordah sped to the endline and fired a cross to Henry in front, who finished the play for the game-tying score.

In the 69th minute, Henry put the Auggies in front with his team-leading third goal of the season, heading home a corner kick by Becerra. Grant Griffin (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) capped the scoring for the Auggies in the 72nd minute, stealing the ball in front and putting it home for his second goal of the season.

"Ben Henry has been consistently one of our better players throughout the early part of the season, so it is no surprise to me that turned the game with two great goals. Credit to Grant Griffin because he played a massive role tonight. He was fantastic when he engaged the opponent 1-v-1, and should probably have a few more assists to his name," Holker said. "Edi Becerra was very good maintaining possession for us and really pressing into tackles as well, which is something that's new for him this season, now that he is healthy."

Augsburg ended up outshooting Wisconsin-Superior (1-1-1 overall) by a 17-10 margin in the game. Augsburg also had six corner kicks to the Yellowjackets' four. Clayton Lynch (SR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) had one save in goal for the Auggies, while Matt Elder (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had five saves for Wisconsin-Superior.

"The back four improved as the game wore on, and by the end there was some certainty between them in how to keep Superior away from Lynch and our goal. That is a good UW-Superior team. They are fast and athletic and play with tenacity," Holker said.

The Yellowjackets got on the scoreboard in the 15th minute, as Brian Grand (JR, North Branch, Minn.) finished a feed off a sprint by Alberto Rivero-Garcia (SR, Santander, Spain).

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (9/7) at 3 p.m., with a nonconference game at Luther (Iowa), the No. 6-ranked team in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III national poll.

"Now we have to set our sights on the sixth-ranked team in the country as another test, another opportunity to learn and grow as we compete in this difficult nonconference portion of our schedule," Holker said.
