Auggies complete sweep of Finlandia with 4-2 win

BOXSCORE HANCOCK, Mich. -- With seven different players figuring in the scoring, the Augsburg College women's hockey team completed a nonconference weekend sweep of host Finlandia University (Mich.) with a 4-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Houghton County Arena.

Casey Miller (JR, Bemidji, Minn.), Darby Lindgren (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS), Kimmy Davis (FY, Niles, Ill./Resurrection College Prep HS) and Rachel Hennessy (JR, Williston, N.D.) all scored goals for Augsburg (5-8-0 overall), with Danielle Heitkamp (FY, Bismarck, N.D./Grand Rapids (Minn.) HS) and Kayla Fuechtmann (SO, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) adding two assists apiece.

Making her second start and third appearance in goal this season, Kristine Fonti (SO, Rothschild, Wis./Wausau West HS) stopped 24 of the 26 shots she faced to pick up the win for the Auggies. Augsburg outshot Finlandia (0-12-0 overall) by a 29-26 margin.

Augsburg opened the scoring just 40 seconds into the game, as Miller scored from Fuechtmann and Heitkamp. Finlandia tied the game in the closing seconds of the second period, as Alena Fiala scored from Brock Nelson and Siera Hache.

Augsburg took the lead back on a power-play goal by Lindgren, assisted by Heitkamp, at the 2:45 mark of the third period. But Finlandia tied the game at the 10:35 mark, with Lindsey Jackman scoring on the power play from Fiala and Nelsen. Twenty-one seconds after the Lions tied the game, the Auggies took the lead to stay, as Davis scored from Fuechtmann.

Hennessy capped the scoring at the 16:44 mark of the final frame, scoring from Brenna Nakonechny (SO, Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS). The goal gave Hennessy her 50th career point as an Auggie (34 goals, 16 assists) in her 63rd career game.

Taylor Gustafson had 25 saves in goal for Finlandia.

Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend with a series against Gustavus. Next Friday's (1/17) game is at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, with next Saturday's (1/18) game at 2 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
