Auggies fall 5-2 to No. 7-ranked Gusties

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Kayla Fuechtmann (SO, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) and Darby Lindgren (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) scored goals for Augsburg College, but the Auggies fell 5-2 to Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Fuechtmann scored a power-play goal at the 6:37 mark of the second period, off assists from Kelsey Lyngdal (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) and Brenna Nakonechny (SO, Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS). Lindgren scored an unassisted goal, her team-leading sixth goal of the season, on a breakaway at the 13:03 mark of the second period.

The two teams combined for six goals in the second period. Gustavus (9-3-2 overall, 7-0-0 MIAC), ranked No. 7 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll and No. 8 in the D3hockey.com national poll, outshot Augsburg by a 32-17 margin in the game.

Seven different Gusties figured in the scoring in Friday's game, with Marissa Brandt (JR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) collecting a goal and an assist. Courtney Boucher (JR, Hastings, Minn.) assisted on four of the Gusties' five goals.

The Gusties opened the scoring at the 4:52 mark of the first period, as Brandt scored from Boucher. The Gusties made the score 2-0 on an unassisted, shorthanded goal by Allison Eder-Zdechlik (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) at the 5:07 mark. Augsburg cut the lead to 2-1 on Fuechtmann's goal 90 seconds later.

The Gusties scored twice in a 1:05 margin later in the second period, as Carolyn Draayer (JR, Deephaven, Minn./Minnetonka HS) scored from Boucher and Brandt on the power play, and Emily Reibert (SO, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul HS) scored from Halie Gudmonson (FY, Albertville, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) and Boucher at the 9:49 mark.

After Lindgren's goal for Augsburg, the Gusties capped the scoring at the 19:31 mark of the second frame, as Riley Viner (FY, South St. Paul, Minn.) scored from Boucher.

Brianna Schulz (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.) recorded 27 saves in goal for the Auggies, while Lindsey Hibbard (SO, Princeton, Minn.) had 14 saves for the Gusties, with Amanda Koep (SO, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) had one save in a short stint of relief late in the game.

Fuechtmann and Callen Naasz (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) had four shots on-goal each for the Auggies, while Ashley Kloncz (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) had two shots.

The teams will finish the series on Saturday (1/18) at 2 p.m. at Gustavus.
