Auggies drop 4-2 decision to Gustavus

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Erik Ordahl (SR, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) and Drew Allen (SO, Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley HS) scored goals for Augsburg College, but the Auggies dropped a 4-2 decision to visiting Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Ordahl scored an unassisted goal on a breakaway for Augsburg (9-5-1 overall, 2-3-1 MIAC) to tie the game at 1-1 at the 3:17 mark of the first period, and Allen's goal, assisted by Rory Vesel (FY, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) and Niklas Almstrom (SR, Medina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS), was the final goal of the contest at the 19:24 mark of the third period.

Cory Leivermann (SR, North Mankato, Minn.) and Tyler Lapic (JR, New Prague, Minn.) had a goal and an assist apiece for Gustavus (9-4-3 overall, 6-4-1 MIAC), with Allex Gallen (SR, Hingham, Mass.) and Andy Pearson (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) scoring the other Gustie goals. Gustav Bengston (SR, Norrtalje, Sweden) had two assists for the Gusties.

The Gusties struck quickly, scoring nine seconds into the game as Lapic scored from Leivermann and Jared Docken (FY, Northfield, Minn.). Augsburg tied the game on Ordahl's breakaway goal.

But the Gusties scored three straight goals to take a 4-1 lead. Leivermann scored from Sam Smith (JR, Vancouver, B.C.) and Lapic at the 5:14 mark of the second period, followed by a power-play goal by Gallen from Bengston at the 17:00 mark. The Gusties added to the lead at the 4:08 mark of the third period, when Pearson scored from Bengston and Adam Smyth (SR, Burnsville, Minn.).

Gustavus outshot Augsburg by a 35-25 margin. John Bretzman (JR, Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had 31 saves in goal for Augsburg, while John McLean (SO, Eagan, Minn.) had 23 saves for the Gusties.

Chris Student (SR, Edina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) and Ordahl had five shots on-goal each for the Auggies, while Zach Dick (JR, Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Mack Ohnsted (SO, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS) had three shots each.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play next weekend with a two-game series at Concordia-Moorhead. Next Friday's (1/24) game is at 7 p.m., and next Saturday's (1/25) game is at 2 p.m.
