BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College women's basketball team battled basket-for-basket with the University of St. Thomas but unfortunately gave up a late run as the Tommies outscored the Auggies 17-4 over the final six minutes to claim a 55-38 victory in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg (7-7 overall, 4-7 MIAC) was led by
Jill Tichy (SR, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS), who finished with 16 points and five rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for the Auggies was
Jessica Lillquist (SO, Sebeka, Minn.), who finished with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor.
No.19 ranked St. Thomas (12-3 overall, 10-2 MIAC) was led by the duo of Maggie Weiers and Taylor Young. Weiers posted an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double, while Young led the Tommie offense with 15 points.
The Auggies and Tommies played very evenly matched basketball in the first half. The scrappy Augsburg defense kept the Tommies out of their offensive rhythm and held them to a mere 28.6 percent (8-of-26) shooting in the frame. Augsburg led for nearly the entire half and took a 19-18 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Neither team was able to build larger than a five point advantage over the first 14 minutes of the frame but an agressive St. Thomas press finally wore the Auggies down as Augsburg was held scoreless over the final three minutes and the Tommies claimed the MIAC win over the Auggies.
For the game, Augsburg shot 34.1 percent (14-of-41) from the field, while St. Thomas connected on 35.8 percent (19-of-53) of its shots. The Tommies claimed a 35-30 advantage on the boards and were able to outscore the Auggies 12-1 in second chance points.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (1/25) at 1 p.m., when it travels to Northfield, Minn. to take on St. Olaf College.
