Auggies claim draw with Cobbers, drop shootout

BOXSCORE MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Mack Ohnsted (SO, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS) scored two goals, including a penalty-shot goal, leading Augsburg College in a 5-5, overtime tie at Concordia College-Moorhead on Friday night in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey action at the Moorhead Sports Center. Concordia claimed the conference's extra point in the shootout, scoring the only goal in three rounds of action.

A four-goal second period gave Augsburg (9-5-2 overall, 2-3-2 MIAC) a 5-4 lead entering the third period, but Concordia (9-6-3 overall, 3-4-2 MIAC) tied the game at 5-5 with an extra-attacker goal with 54 seconds left in regulation time, as Garrett Hendrickson scored from Jordie Bancroft and Andrew Deters.

After a scoreless five minutes of overtime, the teams went to a shootout -- a new feature in MIAC men's hockey this season. Deters scored the only goal in the three rounds of shootout action for the Cobbers. The game is officially recorded as a tie, according to NCAA rules, with the shootout decision only affecting conference points.

Deters gave the Cobbers a 3-2 lead with a goal at the 3:58 mark, but Augsburg took the lead back with two goals in a 1:34 span. Zach Dick (JR, Grand Rapids, Minn.) scored from Ben McClellan (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and Corbin Chapman (FY, Burnsville, Minn.) at the 5:12 mark, and Ohnsted scored his second goal of the game at the 6:46 mark, a power-play goal from Chris Student (SR, Edina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) and Rory Vesel (FY, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS).

Sam Coborn tied the game for the Cobbers at 4-4 at the 10:24 mark, but Augsburg took the lead back at the 18:30 mark, as Erik Ordahl (SR, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) scored from Student.

The Auggies opened the scoring 5:14 into the first period, as Dylan Meier (FY, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS) scored on the power play, assisted by Chapman and Niklas Almstrom (SR, Medina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS). Concordia took a 2-1 lead with two goals in a 1:42 span, with Jordan Christianson and Bancroft scoring.
