Rachel Hennessy (JR, Williston, N.D.) scored her fifth goal of the season early in the third period for Augsburg College, but the Auggies suffered a close 2-1 loss to visiting Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Hennessy tied the game for Augsburg (5-11-0 overall, 2-7-0 MIAC) at 1-1 at the 5:48 mark of the third period, scoring from
Brenna Nakonechny (SO, Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS).
But Concordia (5-8-3 overall, 4-4-1 MIAC) took the lead back at the 11:47 mark of the final frame, as Madison Gendreau (JR, Mandan, N.D./St. Mary's Central HS) scored from Libby Fransdal (JR, Hopkins, Minn.).Â
The game was an evenly-matched affair, with both goalies making several key saves to keep the game close. Concordia outshot Augsburg by a 32-26 margin, and Augsburg goalie
Brianna Schulz (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.) collected 30 saves. Andrea Klug (FY, West Fargo, N.D.) had 25 saves for Concordia.
After a scoreless first two periods, the Cobbers took the lead at the 1:24 mark of the third period, taking advantage of a 5-on-3 power play. Bri Flynn (FY, Bismarck, N.D./Century HS) scored from Cassey Petrich (SO, Elk River, Minn.) and Fransdal.
Nakonechny had five shots on-goal for Augsburg, while
Danielle Heitkamp (FY, Bismarck, N.D./Grand Rapids (Minn.) HS) had four shots and Hennessy had three shots.
The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (1/25) at 2 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
