BOXSCORE MOORHEAD, Minn. -- For the second straight game, Augsburg College and Concordia College-Moorhead played to an overtime tie, and for the second straight game, Concordia claimed a 1-0 decision in the shootout, receiving the extra point in Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game at the Moorhead Sports Center.
Saturday's game featured strong performances by both goalies, as Augsburg's
John Bretzman (JR, Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) stopped 34 of the 36 shots he faced, and Concordia's Kelly Andrew stopped 32 of the 34 shots he faced.
Corbin Chapman (FY, Burnsville, Minn.) scored a goal and added an assist for Augsburg (9-5-3 overall, 2-3-3 MIAC), while
Ben McClellan (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had a goal and
Mack Ohnsted (SO, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS) had two assists.
Andrew Deters and Jordie Bancroft scored goals for Concordia (9-6-4 overall, 3-4-3 MIAC), which rallied from a 2-0, first-period deficit to score the tie. Jordan Christianson had the lone goal for Concordia in the shootout, which lasted three rounds. The game is officially recorded as a tie, according to NCAA rules, with the shootout decision only affecting conference points.
McClellan scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season at the 3:20 mark of the first period, assisted by Chapman and Ohnsted. McClellan is tied for the lead in goals among MIAC players in overall statistics, while Ohnsted's 12 assists are tied for second-most among league players.
Chapman gave the Auggies a 2-0 lead at the 16:06 mark of the opening frame, assisted by Ohnsted and
Lucas Hendrickson (SO, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS). But 70 seconds later, Deters put the Cobbers on the board with a power-play goal, assisted by Caleb Suderman and Charlie Aus. Concordia tied the game at the 13:33 mark of the second period, when Bancroft scored from Aus and Jordan Krebsbach.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play next weekend with a series against St. Thomas. Next Friday's (1/31) game is at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, and next Saturday's (2/1) game is at 7 p.m. at the St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn.
