Bergland scores 1st collegiate goal in Auggie loss

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Megan Bergland (SO, Thief River Falls, Minn.) scored her first collegiate goal early in Saturday's contest, but her Augsburg College women's hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Bergland scored at the 3:07 mark of the first period from Savannah Seeger (FY, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS), who picked up her first collegiate point with the assist. 

Augsburg (5-12-0 overall, 2-8-0 MIAC) was outshot by a 28-17 margin by Concordia (6-8-3 overall, 5-4-1 MIAC). Brianna Schulz (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.) collected 24 saves in goal for the Auggies, while Madison Denny (SO, Andover, Minn.) had 16 saves for Concordia.

Following the Augsburg goal, Concordia tied the game just under two minutes later, as Kristin Drechsel (FY, Moorhead, Minn.) scored from Libby Fransdal (JR, Hopkins, Minn.). The Cobbers took the lead late in the first period, when Madison Gendreau (JR, Mandan, N.D./St. Mary's Central HS) scored from Cassey Petrich (SO, Elk River, Minn.).

Concordia added single goals in the second and third periods, with Ellen Rethwisch (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) scoring from Drechsel, and Anna Westmark (SO, Appleton, Wis./North HS) scoring from Kaya Baker (FY, Grand Rapids, Minn.).

Rachel Hennessy (JR, Williston, N.D.) and Kayla Fuechtmann (SO, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) had four shots on-goal each for Augsburg, while Kendall Christian (JR, Moorhead, Minn.) and Ashley Kloncz (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) had two shots each.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play next weekend with a series against St. Thomas. Next Friday's (1/31) game is at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn., while next Saturday's (2/1) game is at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
