BOXSCORE ST. PETER, Minn. -- Despite outsooting their opponent, the Augsburg College women's basketball team fell 61-51 to Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Gus Young Court.
Agusburg (7-9 overall, 4-9 MIAC) was led by Â
Jessica Lillquist (SO, Sebeka, Minn.), who scored 17 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the floor, while adding five rebounds and a pair of steals.Â
Jenna Orth (SO, Melrose, Minn.) also had a great night for the Auggies, scoring a season-high 10 points and claiming a career-high eight steals.Â
Jill Tichy (SR, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS) led the Auggies on the boards, pulling down seven boards while chipping in nine points and a game-high three blocked shots.
Gustavus (9-8 overall, 6-8 MIAC) was led by offensively by Rachelle Blaschko, who finished with 13 points and defensively by Karina Schroeder, who posted a game-high 16 rebounds and added eight points.
After trailing 30-22 at the half, the Auggies were able to cut the Gustie lead to 48-43 with just under eight minutes remaining in the contest. The Auggies were unfortunately not able to get any closer as Gustavus was able to hold off the Augsburg rally -- the Auggies shot 52.2 percent (12-of-23) in the second half -- but couldn't overcome the half time deficit.
For the game, Augsburg shot 45.8 percent (22-of-48) from the field, while Gustavus converted on 42.6 percent (23-of-54) of itsshots. The Auggies outscored Gusties 32-26 in points in the paint and 18-10 in points off turnovers but were outrebounded 40-23 and outscored 14-3 in second chance points.Â
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (2/1) at 3 p.m., traveling across town. to take on St. Catherine University at the Butler Center.
