Abbey Luger (JR, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) scored a season-high 20 points to lead the Augsburg College women's basketball team to a 63-49 victory over St. Catherine University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall. With the win, the Auggies move to 4-4 overall (1-4 MIAC), while St. Catherine falls to 2-6 overall (1-4 MIAC).
Luger nearly posted her second career double-double, finishing with 20 points and nine rebounds on a 7-of-12 shooting afternoon. Luger also continued to lead the Auggie defense, posting a game-high five steals, while adding four assists and a blocked shot to her stat line. Also finishing in double figures for Augsburg was
Jill Tichy (SR, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS) and
Jessica Lillquist (SO, Sebeka, Minn./Sebeka HS), who finished with 14 and 12 points respectively.
St. Catherine was led offensively by Kennedy Jennings, who finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
Augsburg outscored St. Kate's 16-6 over the first nine-and-a-half minutes of play, but the Wildcats were able to cut the Augsburg lead to 21-20 with 3:18 remaining in the first half. Luger scored six points in the final three minutes, in addition to a Tichy three-pointer, which gave Augsburg a 30-24 advantage at the half. The Auggies stretched their lead to as many as 16 points in the second half before going on to claim the 63-49 victory.
For the game, Augsburg shot a season-high 43.8 percent from the floor (21-of-48), while St. Kate's connected on 38.3 percent (18-of-47) of its shots. The Wildcats grabbed a 32-29 advantage on the boards but Augsburg won the turnover battle, forcing 23 St. Catherine turnovers while only committing 13. The Auggies outscored the Wildcats 30-18 in points in the paint and 28-16 in points off turnovers in a game they led from start to finish.
Augsburg will return to action on Monday (1/5) at 7:30 p.m., when the Auggies travel to St. Joseph, Minn. to take on the St. Benedict Blazers.
