Hot shooting Auggies top Hamline 62-54

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College women's basketball team shot 60 percent from the field in the first half -- including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc -- to post an important 62-54 victory over Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Hamline University at Si Melby Hall on Wednesday night.

Augsburg (5-4 overall, 2-4 MIAC) has now posted back-to-back conference victories and is coming off its best two shooting performances of the season. The Auggies were led offensively by Jill Tichy (SR, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS), who scored a season-high 22 points on a 7-of-11 shooting night, while adding eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

Also scoring in double figures for the Auggies was Jolene Blood (SR, Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS), who finished with 13 points and a pair of steals and blocks. Jenna Orth (SO, Melrose, Minn./Melrose HS) posted career-highs in rebounds and assists for the Auggies, claiming nine boards and dishing out five assists, while Abbey Luger (JR, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) posted seven assists and six steals.

Hamline was led by the duo of Jordan Sammons and Chelsey Bonsante. Sammons posted a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double, while Bonsante, led the Pipers with 15 points.

Augsburg shot the lights out in the first 15 minutes of action and led 35-15 after consecutive 3-point baskets by Tichy, Ashley Anfinson (SO, Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) and Blood. The Auggies took a 35-25 lead into the locker room at the intermission and never relinquished the lead. Hamline was able to cut the Augsburg led six within the final minute but the Auggies were able to hang on for the 62-54 victory.

For the game, Augsburg shot a season-high 46.7 percent from the floor (21-of-45), while Hamline connected on 35.0 percent (21-of-60) of its shots. The Pipers grabbed a narrow 35-34 advantage on the boards. The Auggies played great team basketball on the night, posting 18 assists on their 21 baskets.

Augsburg will return to action on Saturday (1/11), when the Auggies host Macalester College in a men's and women's double header. Women's action begins at 1 p.m. and the men tip off at 3 p.m.
