Late goals sink Auggies at Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Augsburg College took an early lead on an "own goal," but Carleton College rallied, scoring the eventual game-winning goal with four minutes left in regulation, as the Knights claimed a 3-1 win over Augsburg in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Saturday afternoon at Bell Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Carleton 3, Augsburg 1
LOCATION: Bell Field, Northfield, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 5-7-1 overall (3-2-0 MIAC), Carleton 6-5-0 overall (4-1-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg took a 1-0 lead at the 30:55 mark, taking advantage of a Carleton "own goal."
• Carleton outshot Augsburg by a 16-5 margin, including a 7-2 advantage in the second half.
• Nick Lenertz (SO, Newport, Minn./Park HS) had two saves in goal for Augsburg.
• Scott Clinton (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had two shots for the Auggies.

FOR THE FOES
• Will Schifeling scored off a cross from Stephen Johnson at the 43:47 mark to tie the game for the Knights.
• Jordan Cammarota scored an unassisted goal at the 86:00 mark to give the Knights the lead, and Branden McGarrity scored with 20 seconds left in the game for the final margin.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "That was a kick in the teeth. I thought we looked sharp in the early part of the game and really commanded the ball and territory. Scoring on the corner kick was a positive start as well."
• "Unfortunately we gave up a goal with just a few minutes left in the half, and then continued the trend when Jordy got behind with four to play in the game."
• "We didn't do a very good job on the ball in the second half. We were really sloppy and disconnected. It wasn't for lack if effort, though. The guys worked at it -- just maybe not as efficiently as we could have."
• "The last goal is irrelevant as we were all pushed on and Nick simply missed a clearance. Credit to Carleton and Jordy in particular. He's scored three straight late game-winners."
