Auggies set single-game scoring record in 15-0 win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ashley Waalen (SO, Amery, Wis.) and Kaitlyn Terrio (SO, Andover, Minn./Anoka HS) scored four goals apiece, part of a record-setting day for the Augsburg College women's soccer team in a 15-0 triumph over Finlandia University in nonconference action on Monday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 15, Finlandia (Mich.) 0
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 11-4-0 overall, Finlandia 3-11-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg built a 9-0 halftime lead en route to its 15-0 triumph, scoring the most goals in a single game in the 30-season history of the women's soccer program. The 15 goals broke the old single-game record of 11, set in an 11-0 win over Wisconsin-Superior on Oct. 23, 2002.
• Waalen scored four straight goals and assisted on another for a nine-point afternoon. She scored all four of her goals in a 9:28 span overlapping the halftime break, the first on a penalty kick and the other three all assisted by Morgan Kenny (SO, Milwaukee, Wis./Brookfield Central HS).
• Terrio scored a goal in the first half, assisted by Kenny, then scored three second-half goals, all unassisted.
• Marie Fitzgerald (JR, Fort Atkinson, Wis.) scored the first two goals of the game, twice in the first 6:47 of play.
• Hannah Arvold (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) scored her first two collegiate goals, both in the first half.
• Also scoring goals for the Auggies were Beth Zook (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS), Brooke Vroman (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) and Rayni Pemble (FY, Anoka, Minn.).
• Kenny had four assists for the Auggies, while Ellie Peters (FY, Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS) had two assists. Pemble and Vroman also had assists, along with Taylor Kuramoto (SR, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS), Hannah Whitington (SO, Eagle Lake, Minn./Mankato East HS), Carter Denison (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and Emily Gregg (SO, River Falls, Wis.).
• Goalkeeper Lucy Bukowski (JR, Two Harbors, Minn.) did not have to make a save in recording her first shutout of the season.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg outshot Finlandia by a 45-0 margin in the game, its most since a 46-shot effort in a 3-1 home win over Buena Vista (Iowa) on Sept. 15, 2007.
• Augsburg's 15 goals marked the fourth time that Augsburg has scored 10 or more goals in a single game in program history. In addition to the 11-0 win over Wisconsin-Superior on 2002, the Auggies claimed a 10-0 win over Northwestern-St. Paul on Aug. 30, 2014, and scored a 10-1 win over Wisconsin-Superior on Aug. 30, 2013.
• Augsburg is tied with three other schools for the second-most goals scored in a single game in NCAA Division III women's soccer this season. The NCAA Division III single-game high this season is 19 goals, by St. Joseph's (Brooklyn, N.Y.) against St. Elizabeth (N.J.) on Oct. 3.
• Augsburg had 12 corner kicks in the game compared to zero for Finlandia.
• Five Augsburg starters played 20 minutes or less in the game, giving reserves plenty of playing time. Nineteen players saw game action, with 13 figuring in the scoring.
• Augsburg is now 6-1-0 in home games this season, having outscored its opponents at Edor Nelson Field by a 44-2 margin. On the road, Augsburg is 5-3-0, with 11 goals scored and 11 goals allowed.

FOR THE FOES
• Erin Elsner (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo.) had 12 saves in goal for Finlandia.

QUOTE FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH MIKE NAVARRE
• "We knew we were going to have a lot of the ball today, but I was glad to see the players stick to our style of play. I thought everyone that played did well."
• "This game gave us an opportunity to look at more players and give some other players who have been playing a lot some much-needed rest."
• "Hopefully, we can now string some good trainings together and be prepared for another tough MIAC game on Saturday at Gustavus."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to MIAC play with a conference game at Gustavus on Saturday (10/25) at 1 p.m.
• Finlandia hosts Robert Morris-Lake County (Ill.) on Saturday at 10 a.m. (Eastern time).
