Four-set loss to Cornell ends Auggie season

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg College volleyball team's historic season came to an end on Thursday afternoon at the University of St. Thomas' Schoenecker Arena, as the Auggies fell in four sets to Cornell College (Iowa) in the first round of the NCAA Division III national tournament. 

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Cornell def. Augsburg 3-1 (25-18, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21)

RECORDS: Augsburg 23-6 overall, Cornell 25-6 overall
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Rams jumped out to a quick start, earning wins in the first two sets, while the Auggies began to figure out the Cornell defense in the third with a 25-19 victory. Niether team could take control in the fourth set, until the Rams broke a tie at 18 by rattling off three straight points, stealing the momentum and the hopes and dreams of an NCAA tournament run by the Auggies. 
• Colleen Ourada (SR, Omaha, Neb./Mercy HS) finished with a match-high 16 kills, to go along with 14 digs.
• Ashley Peper (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) recorded 12 kills, six digs, four assists and three blocks.
• Jessica Lillquist (JR, Sebeka, Minn.) and Taylor Linn (FY, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) combined for 15 kills and five blocks.  
• Setter Courtney Lemke (SO, Brownton, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) finished with 46 assists, 15 digs and one block. Libero Mackensie Menke (SR, Prior Lake, Minn./Shakopee HS) had 13 digs in the match, while DeeDee Maier (SO, Middleton, Wis.) chipped in 12 digs.
• Jaelyn Arndt (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) finished with seven kills and three digs. 
• Cornell College had five blocks in the matches first two sets and finished with seven, while the Auggies recorded five. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Led by back-to-back MIAC & Central Region Coach of the Year Jane Becker, Augsburg competed in the national tournament for the third time in school history, with its previous berths coming in 1982 and 2013. The Auggies finished with a 23-6 record, and were ranked No. 18 in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association of America Division III national poll.
• Menke finished her career fifth in Augsburg history with 1,297 digs.
• Ourada finished the season with 22 kill-dig double-doubles and 51 in her career. She will leave the Augsburg volleyball program with numerous entries in the record lists. In a school-record 131 matches and 465 sets, she is on the top-10 lists in 10 different career record categories. She has a career-record 1,547 kills and 4,534 attack attempts, while also holding the school record for career blocks (329) -- standing second in solo blocks (89) and block assists (240).
• Ourada is the second Auggie ever to record 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. 

FOR THE FOES
• Diamond Boyd led Conrell with 13 kill, seven digs and one block.
• Taylor Dicus had 12 kills with a .435 attack percentage and three blocks (one solo).
• Katie Sickelka also recorded a double-digit kill total with 11, and chipped in four blocks.
• Setters Katherine Devlin and Kelsey Gaillot finished with 32 and 19 assists respectively.
