Auggies drop 5-3 decision to Pipers

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College was able to take an early lead, but four straight goals by Hamline University was too much to overcome, as the Pipers claimed a 5-3 win over the Auggies in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Augsburg (7-16-0 overall, 4-12-0 MIAC) took a lead at the 12:47 mark, as Ashley Kloncz (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) scored from Claire Cripps (SO, Hutchinson, Minn.) and Darby Lindgren (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS).

But Hamline (7-14-2 overall, 3-11-2 MIAC) struck back with four unanswered tallies -- three in the second period and another in the third frame. Augsburg scored twice in the third period, bracketing the Pipers' final goal.

Augsburg outshot Hamline by a 39-25 margin, but Hamline goalie Katie Beckman (FY, Esko, Minn./Cloquet HS) came up with 36 saves in goal to score the win. Augsburg goalie Britanny Fussy (SO, East Bethel, Minn./Totino-Grace HS), making her second start as an Auggie, had 20 saves.

Savannah Seeger (FY, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) scored an unassisted goal for the Auggies at the 9:14 mark of the third period, and Kayla Fuechtmann (SO, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) scored an extra-attacker goal from Cripps at the 19:46 mark of the final period.

Jordan Verleye (JR, Detroit, Mich.) scored two goals for Hamline, with Mackenzie McCormack (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS), Jenny Magill (SO, Lake Elmo, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) and Breanna Simon (FY, New Richmond, Wis./Shatuck-St. Mary's HS) adding Piper goals. Corinne Henning (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Culver Academy HS) had two assists for the Pipers.

McCormack scored from Jaci Reinke (FY, Waconia, Minn./Holy Family HS) at the 2:06 mark of the second period, followed at the 12:58 mark by a power-play goal from Magill, assisted by Henning and Verleye. Verleye scored an unassisted goal at the 17:53 mark of the second period, and Simon scored at the 5:50 mark of the third period, assisted by Lizzy Scheildt (FY, Stoughton, Wis.) and Nina Chase (SO, Mound, Minn.). The Pipers added an empty-net goal at the 18:26 mark of the third period, as Verleye scored from Henning.
