Auggies close season with sweep of Oles

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Ashley Kloncz (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), Rachel Hennessy (JR, Williston, N.D.) and Kayla Fuechtmann (SO, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) had a goal and an assist each for Augsburg College, as the Auggies closed their 2013-14 women's hockey season with a sweep of St. Olaf College, claiming a 5-2 win in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

The win gave Augsburg (9-16-0 overall, 6-12-0 MIAC) its second series sweep in MIAC play in its final three series of the season, marking the first time the Auggies had recorded two MIAC sweeps in a single season since the 2004-05 campaign. A team with no seniors and 19 first-years and sophomores on its 24-player roster, Augsburg's nine wins marked its most victories since the 2004-05 season (13-10-3), and its six conference wins were its most since the 2005-06 season (7-8-3).

Fuechtmann opened the scoring with a goal at the 16:37 mark of the first period, assisted by Callen Naasz (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) and Hennessy.

St. Olaf (6-18-1 overall, 6-11-1 MIAC) tied the game on a goal from Margot Fleming (SR, Wayzata, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS), assisted by Katie Moeller (SR, Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge HS), at the 4:45 mark of the second period, but Augsburg took the lead back 21 seconds later, as Hennessy scored from Naasz. Danielle Heitkamp (FY, Bismarck, N.D./Grand Rapids (Minn.) HS) gave the Auggies a 3-1 lead with a goal from Fuechtmann at the 17:23 mark of the period.

The Oles cut the lead to 3-2 at the 2:26 mark of the third period, as Devyn Hotho (JR, Minden, Nev./Douglas HS) scored from Sara Lind (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) and Moeller, but Augsburg expanded its lead later in the period. Claire Cripps (SO, Hutchinson, Minn.) scored from Kloncz at the 8:27 mark, and Kloncz scored from Brenna Nakonechny (SO, Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS) at the 14:39 mark.

Augsburg outshot St. Olaf by a 32-29 margin. Brianna Schulz (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.) had 27 saves for the Auggies, with Lauren Torborg (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) marking her second collegiate game in goal with 2:32 of scoreless relief. Hailey Sampson (FY, Apple Valley, Minn.) had 27 saves in goal for St. Olaf.
