Kornbaum scores 29 in Auggie loss to SJU

BOXSCORE COLLEGEVILLE, Minn.  -- Dan Kornbaum (SR, Little Falls, Minn.) led the Augsburg College men's basketball team with 29 points in an 83-71 loss to Saint John's University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wedday night at Sexton Arena.

Augsburg (13-7 overall, 9-6 MIAC) was led by Kornbaum, who finished 12-of-17 from the floor, which tied his season-high of 29 points. The effolrt marked his 11th 20-plus scoring effort of the season. Kornbaum added a game-high nine rebounds and a blocked shot.  Andy Seidlitz (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Noah Veach (SR, Grand Haven, Mich.) finished with 13 and 12 points respectively for the Auggies.

Saint John's (11-9 overall, 9-6 MIAC) finished with five players in double figures, led by Mitchell Kuck, who came off the bench to score 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor.

Augsburg started the game on a 6-0 run but was never quite able to extend its lead to double digits. The Auggies led for nearly the entire first half but the Johnnies were able to score on back-to-back possessions in the final 45 seconds to take a 36-35 lead into the locker room at the break.

The two teams traded baskets for the opening four minutes of the second half. The Johnnies proceeded to go on a 17-4 run midway through the frame, which gave the Johnnies a 63-51 advantage with 7:27 left in the action. The big run proved too much for the Auggies to overcome as St. John's was able to go on and claim the 83-71 victory.

For the game, Augsburg shot 46.3 percent (25-of-54) from the field, while the Johnnies connected on 53.2 percent (33-of-62) of their shots. Saint John's claimed a 34-30 advantage on the boards and was able to outscor the Auggies 50-34 in points in the paint and 26-1 in bench scoring.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (2/8) at 3 p.m., when the Auggies travel across town to take on Macalester College in a men's and women's doubleheader.
