Auggies claim key win over Saint Mary's

BOXSCORE WINONA, Minn. -- With eight different players figuring in the scoring, the Augsburg College men's hockey team claimed a 3-1 victory over host Saint Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday evening at the SMU Ice Arena.

The win is an important one for Augsburg's (10-7-3 overall, 3-5-3 MIAC) hopes of reaching the five-team MIAC postseason playoffs. With five games remaining in the regular season, Augsburg has 12 conference points, sitting in sixth place in the league standings.

Augsburg surrendered the first goal to Saint Mary's (6-13-1 overall, 2-9-0 MIAC), but tied the game late in the first period, then added two third-period goals to clinch the victory. Carl Krieger (SO, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS), Dylan Meier (FY, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS) and Ben McClellan (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored goals for the Auggies.

Dylan Dock gave the Cardinals the lead with a goal at the 16:27 mark of the first period, assisted by Nick Nagel and Mike Wolter. But Augsburg tied the game 2:27 later, as Krieger scored his eighth goal of the season, assisted by Lucas Hendrickson (SO, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS).

Augsburg took the lead at the 1:29 mark of the third period, when Meier scored his fifth goal of the season, assisted by Scott Eberline (SR, Northville, Mich./Novi HS) and Zach Dick (JR, Grand Rapids, Minn.). McClellan capped the scoring with his team-leading 12th goal of the season, assisted by Mack Ohnsted (SO, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS) and Corbin Chapman (FY, Burnsville, Minn.).

Ohnsted now has a team-best 15 assists and 18 points on the season -- tied for third-most among MIAC players in overall statistics in assists and tied for ninth-most in total points. McClellan's 12 goals are fourth-most among MIAC players in overall statistics.

Augsburg outshot Saint Mary's by a 35-27 margin, with Matthew Bartels (FY, Sun City, Calif./Winston Churchill (Ore.) HS) stopping 26 shots to pick up the win in goal for the Auggies. Phil Heinle had 32 saves for Saint Mary's.

The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (2/8) at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
