Fuechtmann scores twice in Auggie win

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Kayla Fuechtmann (SO, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) scored two goals and added an assist, and Brianna Schulz (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.) stopped all 35 shots she faced to pick up her fifth collegiate shutout in goal, as the Augsburg College women's hockey team scored a 4-0 win over Saint Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Callen Naasz (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) scored a goal and added two assists, and Rachel Hennessy (JR, Williston, N.D.) scored a goal for Augsburg (6-14-0 overall, 3-10-0 MIAC) in the win. Casey Miller (JR, Bemidji, Minn.) added an assist for the Auggies.

Saint Mary's (6-13-1 overall, 4-9-0 MIAC) outshot Augsburg by a 35-28 margin, but Schulz stopped all 35 shots she faced to claim her third shutout of the season and fifth of her career. The 35 saves marked the seventh time this season, and third game in a row, where Schulz has claimed 30 or more saves.

Sarah Gustafson (SR, Esko, Minn.) had 24 saves for Saint Mary's.

Hennessy opened the scoring 77 seconds into the game, redirecting a Naasz entry into the net. Fuechtmann gave the Auggies a 2-0 lead with an unassisted goal at the 9:16 mark of the second period.

The Auggies clinched the win with two empty-net goals in the final two minutes. Fuechtmann scored her seventh goal of the season, assisted by Naasz and Miller, at the 18:07 mark, and Naasz scored from Fuechtmann at the 19:07 mark.

The teams will complete the MIAC weekend series on Saturday (2/8) at 2 p.m. at the SMU Ice Arena in Winona, Minn.
