BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College scored two extra-attacker goals in a 28-second span in the final minute of the contest, but could not get a third to tie the game, as Saint Mary's University scored a 5-4 win in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Rory Vesel (FY, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) and
Mack Ohnsted (SO, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS) scored goals at the 19:06 and 19:34 marks of the final period, attempting to rally Augsburg (10-8-3 overall, 3-6-3 MIAC) from a 5-2 deficit. Vesel's goal was assisted by Ohnsted, while
Corbin Chapman (FY, Burnsville, Minn.) assisted on Ohnsted's goal. Ohnsted had a goal and two assists for the Auggies, while Vesel scored two goals in the contest.
Martin Gruse (FY, Trenton, Mich.) had a goal and two assists for Saint Mary's (7-13-1 overall, 3-9-0 MIAC), which claimed a split of the weekend series with the Auggies. Boby Thompson (SR, Centerville, Minn.) had a goal and an assist for the Cardinals.
Augsburg outshot Saint Mary's by a 49-30 margin in the game. Cardinal goalie Phil Heinle (FY, York, Pa.) made 45 saves to score the win.
Matthew Bartels (FY, Sun City, Calif./Winston Churchill (Ore.) HS) had 17 saves in goal for Augsburg before being relieved by
John Bretzman (JR, Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS), who had eight saves.
Vesel opened the scoring for the Auggies at the 5:03 mark, scoring from
Dylan Meier (FY, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS). But the Cardinals tied the game 25 seconds later, when Jonathon Elliott (SO, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) scored from Nick Albergo (FY, Elmhurst, Ill.) and Joey Van Antwerp (SO, Farmington Hills, Mich.). The Cardinals took the lead on a goal from Bob Marx (JR, Sioux City, Iowa), assisted by Thompson and Gruse, but the Auggies ttied the game at 2-2 on a goal by
Zach Dick (JR, Grand Rapids, Minn.) at the 16:04 mark of the first period, assisted by Ohnsted.
The Cardinals then scored three straight goals to pull away from the Auggies. Nick Nagel (SR, Andover, Minn.) scored from Dylan Dock (SO, River Falls, Wis.) and Mike Mezzano (FY, Woodbury, Minn.) at the 3:02 mark of the second period, followed by a power-play goal by Thomson, assisted by Gruse and Albergo, at the 11:55 mark. Gruse scored from Austin Balko (SR, Midland, Mich.) and Jed McGlasson (JR, Kenai, Alaska.).
Augsburg returns to MIAC play next weekend with a series against Hamline. Next Friday's (2/14) game is at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, while next Saturday's (2/15) game is at 7 p.m. at Oscar Johnson Arena in St. Paul.
