Auggies complete sweep of Cardinals with 5-2 win

BOXSCORE WINONA, Minn. -- Callen Naasz (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) scored a goal and added an assist, one of five different players to score a goal for the Augsburg College women's hockey team, as the Auggies completed a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference weekend sweep of Saint Mary's University with a 5-2 triumph over the Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at the SMU Ice Arena.

Brianna Schulz (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.) stopped 23 of the 25 shots she faced to score the win for Augsburg (7-14-0 overall, 4-10-0 MIAC), which has now eclipsed the victory totals for each of the last two seasons (six). The seven wins are the most for the Auggies since an eight-win season in both the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.

The sweep is the first for Augsburg in MIAC play since the 2007-08 season, when Augsburg swept St. Catherine on Jan. 18-19, 2008. The sweep is also the second-ever for Augsburg over Saint Mary's, since the teams began playing in the 1998-99 season. Augsburg last swept the Cardinals on the weekend of Nov. 22-23, 2002.

Augsburg outshot Saint Mary's (6-14-1 overall, 4-10-0 MIAC) by a 30-25 margin to pick up its second series sweep of the season. Nine different Auggies figured in the scoring in Saturday's win.

The Auggies claimed two goals in a 1:36 span to take a 2-0 lead, with Savannah Seeger (FY, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) scoring an unassisted goal at the 16:09 mark of the first period, and Rachel Hennessy (JR, Williston, N.D.) scoring from Naasz and Kayla Fuechtmann (SO, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) at the 17:45 mark. But 10 seconds after Hennessy's goal, Mary DeBartolo scored an unassisted goal for the Cardinals to cut the lead to 2-1.

Kendall Christian (JR, Moorhead, Minn.) scored from Megan Bergland (SO, Thief River Falls, Minn.) and Abigail Dickinson (SO, Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams HS) to give the Auggies a 3-1 lead at the 2:13 mark of the second period.

Naasz scored an unassisted goal for the Auggies at the 3:37 mark of the third period. The Cardinals cut into the lead at the 5:31 mark of the final frame, as Jesse Cwik scored from Kassie Lien and Brooke Bartelt, but Augsburg capped the scoring at the 7:05 mark, as Danielle Heitkamp (FY, Bismarck, N.D./Grand Rapids (Minn.) HS) scored from Ashley Kloncz (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS).

Augsburg returns to action next weekend with a series against Hamline. Next Friday's (2/14) game is at 7 p.m. at the State Fairgrounds Coliseum, and next Saturday's (2/15) game is at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
