Auggies fall to Macalester on goal in final minute

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ben Henry (SO, Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln HS) and Aaron Wylie (JR, Des Moines, Iowa/Lincoln HS) gave Augsburg College a 2-1 first-half advantage, but Macalester College took advantage of an "own goal" and a goal off a corner kick with 44 seconds left in regulation time to claim a 3-2 win in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Macalester 3, Augsburg 2
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 3-6-1 overall (2-1-0 MIAC), Macalester 6-3-1 overall (2-1-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Henry gave the Auggies a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 26:25 mark, heading home a goal off a throw-in by Bobby Kohl (SO, Shorewood, Wis.).
• After Macalester tied the game on a penalty kick goal at the 30:00 mark, the Auggies took the lead back 10 minutes later, when Wylie scored his first goal of the season, connecting on a blast in the middle of the penalty box, assisted by
Scott Clinton (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS).
• The Scots tied the game on an Augsburg "own goal" in the 57th minute, as a cross was redirected into the goal by an Augsburg defender.
• Augsburg outshot Macalester by a 12-9 margin and had a 5-4 advantage on corner kicks in the game. Henry had six of Augsburg's 12 shots.
• Nick Lenertz (SO, Newport, Minn./Park HS) had four saves in goal for the Auggies.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Henry scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season and 10th in his 27-game college career.
• Wylie scored his first collegiate goal in his 37th career game.

FOR THE FOES
• Charlie Spurr (SO, Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) scored Macalester's penalty kick goal in the first half.
• Danny Baumann (FY, Waterford, Wis./Muskego HS) scored the game-winning goal at the 89:16 mark, heading a corner kick from Alan Schembri-Wismayer (SO, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) off the crossbar and into the net.
• Zeke Vanier (SO, Melrose, Mass.) had four saves in goal for Macalester.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "To lose on a PK, own goal, and last-minute corner kick is difficult to swallow. Macalester earned the points, though. Those guys fought their tails off for every ball in every moment of the game."
• "In the first half, I thought we were effective and the level of the game was really good. In the second half, I think you could tell we were missing Edi Becerra (SR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Minneapolis Southwest HS) and Tanner McCarthy (SR, Windsor Heights, Iowa/Dowling Catholic HS), and it became more of a tennis match for the fans. We failed to get on the ball for any spells of time and because of that failed to generate any real quality attacking moments. Aaron Wylie did step up and give us some good moments, including his first goal."
• "We have to regroup and get back to work before heading to Moorhead on Wednesday. This league is far from predictable -- there will be many different twists and turns along the way. The teams that are there in the end will be the ones that bounce back from any setback."
