Auggies fall to No. 17 Wartburg in season-opener

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ayrton Scott (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) completed 14-of-28 passes for 159 yards, but his Augsburg College football team dropped its season-opening game 40-3 to No. 17-ranked Wartburg College (Iowa) in nonconference action on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Wartburg scored touchdowns on its first four drives of the first half, building a 27-0 advantage, outgaining the Auggies by a 486-164 margin in total offense. 
• Augsburg's lone points in the game came on a career-long 39-yard field goal by Brandyn Oliver (SO, Lake City, Minn.) with nine seconds left in the first half.
• In his collegiate debut, Hunter Friesen (FY, Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) caught six passes for 75 yards, while Joey Sonnenfeld (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) caught three passes for 31 yards.
• Jerise Washington (SR, Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS) rushed 12 times for 47 yards, while catching two passes for 20 yards.
• Augsburg linebacker Bryce Nelson (JR, New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) led all players with 14 tackles (four solo), while Denzel Anderson (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had 10 tackles (five solo). Mykar Groves (JR, West St. Paul, Minn./Simley HS) and Alan Medina-Gonzalez (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Tartan HS) had nine tackles each.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The game was played before an overflow crowd of 2,737 spectators at Edor Nelson Field, as the fans saw the football debut of the Auggies' new video scoreboard.
• Undre Smith-Brewer (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS), who earned Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship honors in the 60-meter dash in the 2014 indoor track and field season for the Auggies, had four kickoff returns for 68 yards in the contest.
• Offensive lineman Connor Helgeson (SO, Onalaska, Wis.) showed his versatility again this season, also handling punting duties for the Auggies. He averaged 34.6 yards on five punts on Saturday, with a long of 43 yards. He took over punting duties last last season.


FOR THE FOES
• Wartburg quarterback Logan Schrader (JR, Kildeer, Ill./Dunlap HS) completed 14-of-20 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Brandon Domeyer (SO, Manchester, Iowa/West Delaware HS) scored two touchdowns. Schrader completed passes to eight different receivers, while Domeyer rushed 15 times for 60 yards.
• Wide receiver Robbie Anstoetter (JR, Farley, Iowa/Dyersville Beckman HS) caught two touchdown passes, including one on an option pass from fellow receiver Taylor Jacobsmeier (SR, Wapello, Iowa) on the final play of the first quarter. Jake Haberman (SO, Clarion, Iowa/Clarion-Goldfield HS) rushed 16 times for 77 yards and a touchdown.
• Wartburg defenders sacked Augsburg quarterback Scott five times, in the process holding Augsburg to just five net rushing yards in the game. Zach Twedt (SR, Atkins, Iowa/Benton Community HS) had seven tackles (five solo), including a game-high 3.5 sacks for the Knights.
• Wartburg is ranked No. 17 in the D3football.com preseason national poll.
