NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 69-65 loss to St. Olaf College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Tuesday evening at the Skoglund Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED• In a contest that saw four lead changes and five ties, the game was bound to go down to the wire. The Auggies used a J
oe Zangel (SR, Richfield, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) layup to take a 63-62 lead with just 48 seconds remaining in the contest. St. Olaf came down on its next possession and hit a three-pointer to go up 65-63. Augsburg was forced into a turnover and had to foul. The Oles hit 1-of-2 from the free-throw line to extend the lead to 66-63. Augsburg was not able to convert on its next possession and St. Olaf again hit 1-of-2 from the free-throw line, to go up 67-63.
Harry Sonie (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) scored a layup with six seconds left in the game to cut the Ole lead to 67-65. Augsburg fouled and St. Olaf hit 2-of-2 to claim the 69-65 victory.
• Augsburg finished with five players in double figures, led by
Brett Rasmussen (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), who posted 14 points, which included a perfect 7-for-7 night at the free-throw line.
• Zangel and Kevin McKiernan (FY, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) scored 12 points apiece, with Zangel adding five rebounds, a block, a steal and an assist.
• Ryan Gilmer (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) led the Auggies on the boards, grabbing a team-high nine rebounds, while adding four points and an assist. • For the game, Augsburg shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52) from the floor, while St. Olaf connected on 45.6 percent (26-of-57) of its field-goal attempts.
• Augsburg claimed a 37-33 advantage on the boards.
FOR THE FOES• St. Olaf finished with three players in double figures, led by Ben Figini, who finished with 24 points on 11-of-21 shooting from the floor.
• Riley Aeikens finished with the only double-double of the night, posting 14 points and 10 rebounds.
UP NEXT• Augsburg returns to action Saturday (12/5) when the Auggies host Gustavus Adolphus in a men's and women's doubleheader. Men tip off at 1 p.m., while the women tip off at 3 p.m.
