Auggies score sweep of Crown in dome

MINNEAPOLIS -- Lauren Torborg (SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) hit 5-for-7 with three RBI, and Bekka Kelly (SR, Columbia Heights, Minn.) hit 4-for-7 with three RBI, leading the Augsburg College softball team in a nonconference doubleheader sweep of Crown College on Friday evening at the Edor Nelson Field dome.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg scored four runs in the third inning and four runs in the fifth inning to blow open the first game, which Augsburg won 10-2 in a game ended after six innings due to the NCAA eight-run rule.
• Jacquline Nichols (FY, Royalton, Minn.) hit her first collegiate home run, a solo home run in the sixth inning, while also driving in a run on a fielder's choice in the third inning and on a fielder's choice bunt in the fifth. Nichols also scored three runs.
• Kelly went 3-for-4 with two doubles, including a three-run double in the third inning. She also had a double in the fifth inning, scoring on a two-run single by Haley Larson (FY, Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake HS).
• Torborg went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Lindsay Helbach (SR, Amherst, Wis.) had a triple and scored two runs.
• Courtney Larsen (FY, Little Canada, Minn./Concordia Academy HS) started in the pitching circle for the Auggies, striking out one while walking one in two innings. Helbach earned the win in relief, striking out one while walking three and allowing one hit in four innings of work.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• A five-run second inning, where Augsburg sent nine batters to the plate, gave the Auggies an early advantage. Amanda Niznik (SO, Columbia Heights, Minn.) drove in a run on a single, Torborg hit a two-run double and Sarah Buckner (JR, Duluth, Minn./East HS) hit a run-scoring double. All five runs were unearned, following a Crown throwing error with two outs.
• Two more runs came across in the fourth inning, as Torborg hit a run-scoring triple and Buckner drove in a run on a single.
• The game ended early in the fifth inning, as pinch-hitter Brenna Nakonechny (JR, Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS) singled, stole second, reached third on a fielder's choice and came across on a sacrifice fly by Meghan Springborn (FY, Oakdale, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS).
• Torborg, Buckner and Nichols had two hits each for the Auggies, with Torborg and Ashley Anfinson (JR, Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) scoring two runs each.

• Larsen started in the pitching circle, with Helbach earning the win in relief. Niznik also pitched an inning for the Auggies.

FOR THE FOES
• Marissa Becerra had three hits for Crown in the doubleheader, with a hit in the first game and two hits in the second game.
• Cassidy Valenzuela had a hit in each game for the Storm.
• In the first game, Sofia Palacios and Janelle Williams drove in runs on infield groundouts in the third inning, leading to Crown's lone runs.

• Both teams finish the weekend with doubleheaders in the Edor Nelson Field dome on Saturday (3/6). Crown faces Loras (Iowa) at 8:30 a.m., and Augsburg hosts St. Catherine in a MIAC doubleheader at 12:30 p.m.
