Auggies split doubleheader with Tommies

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg College baseball team split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with the University of St. Thomas at Koch Diamond. In the first game on Sunday, the Auggies were edged 4-3 by the Tommies. The second game was suspended due to weather and completed on Monday, with the Auggies winning 5-4.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• In the first game, scheduled for seven innings, the Auggies scored three runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead, but St. Thomas tied the game with a run in the seventh to force extra innings.
• With two outs in the sixth, Andrew Julkowski (JR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) hit a double to right field, and after two Auggies were hit by pitches, Abe Welckle (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) hit an RBI single, and two more runs came across on a wild pitch.
• Three singles in the bottom of the 12th inning, including one with two outs, plated the game-winning run for the Tommies.
• Julkowski went 2-for-5 in the game -- both doubles -- the lone Auggie to collect more than one hit in the game. Steven Piette (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) also had a double for the Auggies.
• Jordan Brandt (SO, Eagan, Minn.) struck out three in five innings of work for the Auggies, with Lincoln Hochmuth (SO, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS), Piette and Tanner Oakes (SR, Jordan, Minn.) pitching in relief.


GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Jack Duffy (SO, Fridley, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) put the Auggies on the scoreboard in the second game with a solo home run in the second inning.
• The Auggies scored three runs in the fourth inning, as Julkowski doubled and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch, and Brandon Schmahl (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) and Scott Livermore (JR, Stillwater, Minn.) hit run-scoring singles.
• Gordon Kappers (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) hit a triple and came around to score on a wild pitch in the fifth inning.
• Julkowski and Welckle had two hits each to lead the Auggies.
• Four pitchers threw in the game for the Auggies, with Luke Chinn (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) earning the save with two innings of hitless, scoreless relief.


FOR THE FOES
• Brady Johnson went 3-for-6 with two RBI for the Tommies and scored the game-winning run, while Jimmy Dolan went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Ben Carpenter had the game-winning single in the 12th inning.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg's scheduled nonconference doubleheader at Macalester, which was to be played on Monday (5/4), has been cancelled and will not be made up. Augsburg will close its season on Tuesday (5/5) at 6 p.m., facing St. Thomas in a single, nine-inning nonconference game at Parade Stadium.
