Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Augsburg season ends with OT loss at St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg College men's soccer team's season came to an end in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff semifinals, as the top-seeded University of St. Thomas claimed a 1-0, overtime win on Wednesday morning.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: St. Thomas 1, Augsburg 0 (OT)
LOCATION: UST South Field, St. Paul, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 8-10-2 overall, St. Thomas 15-1-3 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Playing on less than a day's rest after its 2-1 quarterfinal win at Gustavus on Tuesday, the Auggies put together a strong effort against St. Thomas, a team the Auggies beat 2-0 on Saturday to clinch a playoff berth. St. Thomas entered the game ranked No. 12 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III national poll, falling from its No. 6 ranking last week.
• Goalkeeper Clark Page (SO, Delafield, Wis.), who started in goal for the Auggies in nine of the team's last 10 games, came up with five saves in a complete-game effort. St. Thomas outshot Augsburg by a 14-2 margin in the game -- 6-1 in the first half, 7-1 in the second half and 1-0 in overtime.
• Bobby Kohl (JR, Shorewood, Wis.) had both Augsburg shots, both on target in the 11th and 70th minutes.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The game was the final collegiate contest for three Augsburg seniors -- Ben Henry (SR, Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln HS), Barinedum Kordah (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) and Festus Lamin (SR, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS). Henry appeared in 73 career games as an Auggie with 16 goals and seven assists for 39 points; Kordah appeared in 73 career games with 11 goals and eight assists for 30 points; and Lamin appeared in 54 games, averaging 53.8 minutes played per-game as a defender.
• Augsburg was making its fifth appearance in the MIAC postseason playoffs under Head Coach Greg Holker, and its first appearance since the 2011 season.

FOR THE FOES
• Connor Young scored the game-winning goal 54 seconds into overtime, scoring on a rebound from Mark Heydt and Christian Elliehausen.
• Elliehausen and Shae Botum had three shots each for St. Thomas, while Young, Amos Nash and Johnny Mulvahill had two shots each.
• Aidan Hogan had two saves in goal for the Tommies.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "It was always a tall task turning around less than 20 hours after our first game, and against the No. 12 team in the country. Add to that we lost Ebesa Hamid in the 15th minute, and Lionel Vang could hardly move with his injury from the Gustavus game and the challenge becomes even greater.
• "That being said, I couldn't be prouder of the effort our guys all put in today. We made a great game of it, and our three seniors led the group with incredible performances. Those guys left everything they had out there for this program, and I am so proud of what they have accomplished over their careers -- and the condition the program is in today because of their contributions. Thank you Ben Henry, Barinedum Kordah, and Festus Lamin!"
• "We have had our backs against the wall for three weeks now, and have shown that we are capable of beating the very best teams. We believe in what we do, we believe that we are one of the best teams, and we are willing to do the work to continue to grow and improve. That doesn't end today."
• "St. Thomas was the deserved winner today, and we wish them the best of luck in the NCAA tournament representing our conference. Perhaps we get two conference teams in, depending on the other semifinal tonight and Saturday's title match. At this point, we are cheering for the MIAC."
