Auggies advance to MIAC women's soccer title game

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- Marissa Guillou (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) became Augsburg College's single-season and career record-holder for goalkeeper victories, stopping five shots to pick up the win in Augsburg's 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer playoff semifinal win over host Bethel University on Wednesday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, Bethel 0
LOCATION: Ona North Complex, Arden Hills, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 16-4-0 overall, Bethel 14-4-1 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• With the win, No. 3-seed Augsburg advances to the conference playoff championship game for the third time in the past five years, and will face top-seed St. Thomas on Saturday (11/5) at 1:30 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn., with the winner earning the MIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national tournament. St. Thomas topped Augsburg 2-1 in the team's regular-season meeting last Saturday in St. Paul.
• Improving to 14-3-0 on the season, Guillou broke Augsburg's career record for goalkeeper wins, improving to 38-13-0. She broke the old mark of 37 wins, set by Maggie DeGroot (2005-08). She also set a new Augsburg single-season record for goalkeeper wins. The previous record of 13 was set by Guillou in 2014 and Beth Petrik in 1995.
• Augsburg's defensive foursome of Emily Gregg (SR, River Falls, Wis.), Ashley Waalen (SR, Amery, Wis.), Hannah Whitington (SR, Eagle Lake, Minn./Mankato East HS) and Trine Boeystad (FY, Rykkinn, Norway/Nadderud VGS) joined Guillou in claiming Augsburg's 13th team shutout of the season, and Guillou's fifth solo shutout of the year. Gregg, Waalen and Whitington played the full 90 minutes, while Boeystad played 80 minutes.
• Ashley St. Aubin (FY, Burnsville, Minn.) and Carter Denison (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) scored goals for the Auggies -- St. Aubin just 2:39 into the game and Denison at the 53:31 mark. Both were unassisted tallies.
• Both teams had 10 shots in the game, with Augsburg putting nine on-goal, compared to five for Bethel. St. Aubin had five shots, while Denison had two shots. Both teams also had three corner kicks in the contest.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg has now outscored its opponents by a 47-8 margin this season, with the 47 goals leading all teams in the MIAC's overall statistics.
• Augsburg's eight goals allowed, 12 team shutouts and 0.40 team goals-against-average are all second-best among MIAC defenses.
• St. Aubin leads the MIAC's overall statistics in both goals (15) and total points (37). Her 37 points are the fourth-most in a single season in Augsburg history, while her 15 goals are third-most in a single season.

FOR THE FOES
• Mikala Smith had six shots for Bethel, while Brooke Ogne had three shots.
• Dylan Melby had seven saves in goal for the Royals.

QUOTE FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH MIKE NAVARRE
• "First, congrats to Bethel on a outstanding season. Their growth and improvement from last year to this year is very impressive. While I knew it was not ideal to play back-to-back, I am confident in this group and we felt good going into the game today. Fortunately we were able to get two great goals and stay strong defensively. St Thomas obviously presents a great challenge for us on Saturday. We will learn what we can from our last game and come ready to compete."
