Auggies drop heartbreaker to Blazers

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College women's basketball team dropped a 42-37 heartbreaker to the College of Saint Benedict in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph. With the loss, Augsburg falls just short of reaching the MIAC postseason playoffs for the second consecutive season.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Saint Benedict 42, Augsburg 37
LOCATION: Claire Lynch Hall, St. Joseph, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 14-11 overall (9-9 MIAC), Saint Benedict 15-10 overall (10-8 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• In a low-scoring affair that saw neither team able to extend a lead to double digits, the contest not surprisingly went down to the wire. St. Ben's held a 36-33 lead with four minutes to play but the Auggies were not able to score on their next five possessions and despite an Allison McKee (SR, New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View HS) made three-pointer with 50 seconds left in the action, were not able to steal the road victory from the Blazers.
• With the loss, the Auggie's playoff hopes fall just short to the Blazers who claimed the sixth and final seed in the MIAC playoffs with the win.
Jessica Lillquist (SR, Sebeka, Minn.) led the Auggie offense with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting, while adding nine rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
• McKee finished with seven points and three steals, while Jenna Orth (SR, Melrose, Minn.) pulled down seven rebounds and added two points and a pair of assists and steals.

• The Auggies were held to a season-low 37 points, and finished shooting 32.0 percent (16-of-50) from the field. The Blazers connected on 35.9 percent (14-of-39) of their shot attempts.
• Saint Benedict outrebounded the Auggies by a 34-30 margin in the game and claimed a 20-8 advantage in points in the paint.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The Auggies' 14 wins are tied for the second-most wins in a single season in program history, behind last year's 15-12 finish.

FOR THE FOES
• Chelsey Guetter and Alison Newton finished with 12 and 11 points respectively to lead the Blazer offense.
• Macy Kelly led the Blazers on the boards, pulling down seven rebounds, while adding seven points and a pair of steals.
