Auggies claim No. 3 seed in MIAC playoffs

MINNEAPOLIS -- Behind an overtime, game-winning goal by Megan Johnson (FY, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS), the Augsburg College women's hockey team claimed the No. 3 seed in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason playoffs, following a 3-2, overtime victory over the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday afternoon at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Johnson scored the game-winning goal for the Auggies at the 2:27 mark of overtime, assisted by Ashley Kloncz (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS). The goal was Johnson's 11th of the season.
• Bridget Walter (FY, Princeton, Minn.) opened the scoring for the Auggies with a goal at the 2:00 mark of the second period, assisted by Jacie Hoehn (FY, Waseca, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS) and Valerie Whichello (FY, Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS). The assist marked Hoehn's first collegiate point.
• After Saint Benedict tied the game at the 13:06 mark of the second period, Augsburg took the lead back 2:53 later, as Kloncz scored a power-play goal from Brenna Nakonechny (SR, Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS) and Callen Naasz (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS).

• Augsburg outshot Saint Benedict by a 34-24 margin. Erika Allen (SR, Roseville, Minn.) recorded 22 saves in goal for the Auggies.
• Johnson had six shots on-goal for Augsburg, while Kayla Fuechtmann (SR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) had five shots.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• With the win, Augsburg claimed the No. 3 spot in the five-team MIAC postseason playoffs, finishing with 23 points in the league race. Augsburg will play in the MIAC playoff semifinals next Saturday (2/27) against No. 2-seed Bethel at the Schwan SuperRink in Blaine, Minn.

• The Auggies qualified for the MIAC postseason playoffs for the fifth time in school history, and the first time since a three-year playoff run from 2002-03 to 2004-05. Augsburg won the inaugural MIAC playoff tournament in the 1999-2000 season.
• Johnson's 11 goals are the most among MIAC rookies in overall statistics.

• Aly Hoffman scored for the Blazers at the 13:06 mark of the second period, assisted by Liz Hermes and Hannah Esselman.
• Allison Kirk tied the game with a goal at the 6:37 mark of the third period, assisted by Shelby Schneider and Stephanie Kirk.

• Angel Hillstrom had 31 saves in goal for Saint Benedict.
