Augsburg's hoops season ends at Saint John's

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- In a game of back-and-forth runs, a 16-4 run gave Saint John's University the lead to stay, ending Augsburg College's season with a 99-86 decision in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball playoff quarterfinal game on Wednesday evening at Sexton Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The 16-4 run gave Saint John's an 81-69 lead over the Auggies with 5:23 remaining in the second half. The Auggies cut the lead to 93-86 in the final minute, but the Johnnies scored the final six ponts of the game, including the last four points at the free-throw line.
• An 18-6 run over a 4:59 span gave the Johnnies a 32-18 lead with 7:52 left in the first half, and the Johnnies led 44-33 at halftime. A 15-4 run, with eight points from Brett Rasmussen (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), enabled the Auggies to tie the game at 48-48 with 16:23 left to play. The game was tied four times more before the final Johnnie run.
• Rasmussen scored 25 points to lead the Auggies, adding four rebounds and three assists.
• Joe Zangel (SR, Richfield, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) scored 22 points with nine rebounds.
• Richie Perea (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS) scored 16 points with five rebounds.

• Collin Olmscheid (SO, Buffalo, Minn.) scored 12 points with five rebounds and a steal, and Harry Sonie (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) scored eight points with five assists, two steals and two rebounds.
• Saint John's outshot Augsburg by a 63.3 percent (38-of-60) to 47.5 percent (29-of-61) margin in the game. The Johnnies shot 72.4 percent (21-of-29) in the second half.
• Augsburg outrebounded Saint John's by a 30-25 margin in the game. The Johnnies had only three turnovers, compared to six for Augsburg.
• The Johnnie bench outscored the Auggie bench by a 29-3 margin.

• Augsburg reached the MIAC's postseason playoffs for the sixth time in the past eight seasons.
