Auggies advance to MIAC title game with 5-2 win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring three goals in the final 6:43 of play, the Augsburg College men's hockey team advanced to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff championship game with a 5-2 semifinal win over Hamline University on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Tied 2-2 after two periods, Augsburg finished the game with three goals in a 5:51 span to advance to the conference title contest.
• Drew Allen (SR, Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley HS) finished a break with a goal from Lucas Hendrickson (SR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) and Will Peterson (SO, Eagan, Minn.) at the 13:17 mark of the third period.
• Corbin Chapman (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) scored his second goal of the game at the 16:11 mark, assisted by Luke Dietsch (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS), and Nate Flynn (SO, Hastings, Minn.) capped the scoring with an empty-net goal from Rory Vesel (JR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) with 52 seconds remaining.
• Chapman opened the scoring for the Auggies with a goal from Max Pernhem (SO, Stockholm, Sweden/Dragonskolan) and Dietsch 3:26 into the first period.
• Peterson made the score 2-0 in favor of the Auggies at the 15:46 mark of the opening stanza, assisted by Mack Ohnsted (SR, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS).
• Augsburg outshot Hamline by a 38-26 margin. Auggie goalie Jordyn Kaufer (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) collected 24 saves for the win.
• Flynn had nine shots on-goal for the Auggies, while Allen and Evan Hesse (SO, Monticello, Minn./Palmer (Alaska) HS) had four shots on-goal each.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The MIAC's regular-season champions, Augsburg will host Saint John's in the conference playoff championship game next Saturday (2/27) at Ed Saugestad Rink. The teams will play for the Saugestad Cup MIAC playoff trophy, named for the legendary Augsburg coach and educator. The playoff champion will receive the MIAC's automatic berth in the 11-team NCAA Division III national playoffs.
• Augsburg was the inaugural winner of the Saugestad Cup in the 1997-98 season, the team's last MIAC playoff title and last berth in the NCAA tournament.


FOR THE FOES
• Hamline scored twice in the final 1:02 of the second period to tie the game at 2-2. Garrett Schmitz scored from Brandon Reinholz at the 18:58 mark, and Mitch McPherson scored a power-play goal from Brandon Zurn and Jesse Kessler at the 19:54 mark.
• Justin Quale had 33 saves in goal for Hamline.
