Auggies gain Homecoming win, 49-17 over Carleton

MINNEAPOLIS -- Behind 205 passing yards and three touchdowns by Sam Keis (SR, Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels HS) and a dominant defense that forced five turnovers, the Augsburg College football team scored a 49-17 Homecoming victory over Carleton College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg's defense forced five turnovers -- two interceptions and three fumbles -- while also stopping the Knights on downs three times. Four of the turnovers led to Augsburg touchdowns, including a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown by Isiah Malone (JR, Brooklyn Center, Minn./Park Center HS) -- his second of the season -- that opened the scoring with 5:31 left in the first quarter. The Auggies also gained two touchdowns on drives after stopping Carleton on downs.
• Augsburg built a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, scoring three touchdowns in a 2:48 span.
• Making his second start of the season at quarterback, Keis completed 21-of-29 passes for 205 yards and three interceptions, while being intercepted twice. He also led the Auggies in rushing, gaining 51 yards on 13 carries. Raymond Guyton Jr. (SO, Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's HS), who started the season as Augsburg's quarterback before moving to wide receiver, caught five passes for 40 yards and a third-quarter 18-yard touchdown. He also completed a touchdown pass on a reverse, a 39-yard pass to Nick Heenie (SO, Victoria, Minn./Waconia HS) in the second quarter.
• Tiras Bolton (JR, Omaha, Neb./Omaha Westside HS) rushed for a three-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
• Augsburg scored three touchdowns in the third quarter -- an 11-yard pass from Keis to Kenyatta Mooers (SO, Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), Guyton's 18-yard reception from Keis, and a 31-yard pass from Keis to James Newton (JR, Roseville, Minn.). The Auggies capped their scoring with an eight-yard rushing score by Anastacio VandenBosch-Romo (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) in the fourth quarter.
• Heenie caught five passes for 56 yards, Cyrus Elliott (SR, Baldwin, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) caught three passes for 52 yards and Newton caught two passes for 35 yards.
• Defensively, Lorenzo Hernandez (SO, New Ulm, Minn.) led the Auggies with 11 tackles (three solo), while Derek Glynn (FY, Faribault, Minn.) had seven tackles (one solo). William Johnson (SR, St. Anthony Village, Minn.) had six tackles (five solo), including a tackle for loss and a forced fumble which later led to an Augsburg touchdown.
• Augsburg had five sacks, including two by Khoa Nguyen (SR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS). One of his sacks forced a fumble that later led to an Augsburg touchdown. Barclay Bates (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) had 1.5 sacks, Jerome Borward (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Tartan HS) had a sack and Ray Grabau (SO, Blaine, Minn./Rush City HS) had a half-sack. Lineman Steven O'Brien (SO, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) had a third-quarter interception that led to an Augsburg touchdown on the following play.

FOR THE FOES
• Zach Creighton went 8-for-11 passing for 63 yards for Carleton, while also rushing 11 times for 33 yards. Ethan Trujillo played at quarterback in the second half and competed 13-of-24 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns -- a 71-yarder to Emmanual Williams in the third quarter and a 21-yarder to Chris Madden in the fourth quarter.
• Williams caught eight passes for 95 yards, Madden caught four passes for 54 yards and Mack Journell caught three passes for 45 yards. Logan Emholtz rushed 13 times for 25 yards.
• Jacob Heath led the Knights' defense with eight tackles (one solo), including a sack. Merrick Ducharme and Marcus Irrthum had seven tackles each.
• Jake Bechstein had six tackles (two solo) and an interception, while Dylan Saline had a forced fumble and an interception.
