Olmscheid scores 43 in Augsburg win at Macalester

MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring 43 points, the most by an Augsburg College men's basketball player since the 1998-99 season, Collin Olmscheid (JR, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) powered his Auggies to an 89-86 win at Macalester College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 89, Macalester 86
LOCATION: Leonard Center, St. Paul, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 7-8 overall (5-5 MIAC), Macalester 5-10 overall (1-9 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Olmscheid had an incredible performance in leading the Auggies to the victory, scoring a career-high 43 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field (5-of-6 from three-point range) and 16-of-17 from the free-throw line. He scored 23 points in the first half, as Augsburg took a 49-35 halftime advantage, then scored 20 points in the second half -- including 12-of-13 from the free-throw line. In addition to his scoring effort, Olmscheid added a team-high nine rebounds and three assists, playing 38 of the 40 minutes in the contest.
• Augsburg sprinted to an early lead, taking a 23-9 lead with 12:15 left in the first half and eventually building as much as a 15-point advantage in the opening stanza. The Scots opened the second half with a 20-4 run over a 7:12 span, cutting the Augsburg advantage to 55-53 with 12:48 left.
• The Auggie lead was cut to one point four times in the final 5:09, including at 87-86 with two seconds left, after Macalester connected on the first of two free throws. But the Scots couldn't connect on the second, and Olmscheid captured the rebound and was fouled. He converted two free throws to give the Auggies the final margin of victory.
• Kevin McKiernan (SO, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) scored 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field, marking his 10th double-digit scoring effort in his last 11 games.
Richie Perea (SR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS) scored 15 points, while pulling down six rebounds and adding four assists, his seventh double-digit scoring game of the season.
• Harry Sonie (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) scored seven points with a game-high seven assists, his seventh game (and fourth in a row) with four-plus assists.
• Augsburg recorded a season-low five turnovers, while Macalester also had only five turnovers.
• Augsburg outrebounded Macalester by a 33-20 margin, its first double-digit rebounding advantage of the season.
• The Auggies hit 25-of-51 (49.0 percent) from the field, including a season-best-tying 12-of-24 (50.0 percent) from three-point range. Macalester converted 60.0 percent (30-of-50) from the field, including 10-of-18 from (55.6 percent) from three-point range. The Auggies hit 27-of-31 from the free-throw line, compared to 16-of-23 for the Scots.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Olmscheid's 43 points is the most by an Augsburg men's basketball player in a single game since Devean George '99 scored an MIAC-record 52 points in a 105-97 overtime win at Carleton on Jan. 16, 1999. It's the first 40-plus-point regulation game for an Auggie since George scored 40 points in a 78-67 victory against Concordia-Moorhead on Jan. 23, 1999.
• The 43-point effort by Olmscheid is the most by an MIAC men's basketball player since Gustavus' Seth Anderson scored 45 points in a game at Buena Vista (Iowa) on Jan. 15, 2011. It's just the third 40-plus-point game in the years since Anderson's effort, the other two both by Macalester players -- 40 by Michael Gutierrez this past Saturday against Hamline, and 40 by Dylan Kilgour on Nov. 23, 2013 against Lake Forest.
• Olmscheid claimed a career high in scoring for the second time in a week, after scoring 34 points in the Auggies' 111-106 win over Saint Mary's last Wednesday.
• Olmscheid has scored 20-plus points in eight of his 15 games this season. His 21.1 points per-game average is second among MIAC players in overall statistics, as is his 8.0 rebounds per-game.

FOR THE FOES
• Michael Gutierrez led Macalester with 25 points, while adding four rebounds, three assists and a steal. Kareem Ismail scored 17 points with five assists, five rebounds and two blocked shots.
• All five Scots starters scored in double figures, with Wyatt Ferm scoring 15 points, Dylan Kilgour scoring 13 points and Carl Salvino scoring 11 points.
