7-goal 2nd period leads to 10-2 Augsburg win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring seven goals on 16 shots on-goal in the second period, the Augsburg College men's hockey team earned an important Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series sweep with a 10-2 victory over Concordia College-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Leading 1-0 after one period, the Auggies scored two shorthanded goals in the first 2:16 of the second period, sparking an Auggie run of seven goals in the frame. Both teams scored twice in the third period for the final result.
• Fifteen of the 18 Augsburg skaters figured in the scoring, with seven recording multiple-point performances. Eric Brenk (SO, Moorhead, Minn.) and Nate Flynn (JR, Hastings, Minn.) scored two goals and an assist each, while Trevor Stewart (SR, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Eastmont HS) and Corbin Chapman (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) had a goal and two assists each. Evan Hesse (JR, Monticello, Minn./Palmer (Alaska HS) and Lukas Gillett (SO, Rosemount, Minn.) had a goal and an assist each, and Rory Vesel (SR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) had two assists.
• Luke Dietsch (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and Eli May (JR, Eagan, Minn.) also scored goals, and Jason Krych (FY, Champlin, Minn./Totino-Grace HS), Drew Anderson (JR, Rochester, Minn./Century HS), Dylan Meier (SR, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS), Andy Faust (JR, Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray HS), Max Pernhem (JR, Stockholm, Sweden/Dragonskolan) and Paul Soubry (SO, Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Paul's HS) added assists.
• Hesse opened the scoring with an even-strength goal midway through the first period, and Gillett and Stewart notched shorthanded goals in the first 2:16 of the second frame. Flynn scored twice in the second period, with Dietsch, Chapman, Brenk and Flynn adding the other second-period goals. May and Brenk capped the scoring for the Auggies with third-period goals.
• Augsburg outshot Concordia by a 45-30 margin in the game. Stewart had six shots on-goal to lead the Auggies.
• Nick Schmit (SO, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) improved to 7-1-1 in goal with a 28-save performance.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The 10 goals are the most scored by Augsburg in a single game since a 10-2 win at Concordia on Feb. 25, 2006.
• Augsburg has outscored its opponents by a 65-37 margin this season -- both the most goals scored by MIAC teams in overall statistics (3.82 per-game) and fewest goals allowed (2.18 per-game). Nineteen different Auggies have scored goals for the Auggies this season, and 22 different Auggies have recorded either a goal or assist -- with 10 different Auggies recording 10 or more points so far.
• Augsburg killed two Concordia power plays on Saturday. This season, the Auggies have allowed just five power-play goals in 72 opportunities, with its .931 penalty-kill percentage tops among MIAC teams in overall statistics and second-best nationally among NCAA Division III teams.
• Schmit's 1.65 goals-against-average and .945 save percentage are both tops among MIAC goalies in overall statistics, with the save percentage seventh-best and GAA eighth-best among NCAA Division III goalies nationally.

FOR THE FOES
• John Grebosky and Tanner Okeson scored third-period goals for Concordia.
• Sam Nelson had 31 saves in goal in 51 minutes of play for the Cobbers, with Jacob Stephan recording four saves in eight-and-a-half minutes of play in the second period.

• Augsburg has a series against Saint Mary's next weekend, with next Friday's (1/27) game at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, and next Saturday's (1/28) game at 7 p.m. in Winona, Minn.
