Augsburg edged 78-75 at Gustavus

MINNEAPOLIS -- Despite outshooting and outrebounding its opponent, the Augsburg College men's basketball team was edged 78-75 by Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg claimed its largest lead of the game, a 54-47 advantage, at the 14:25 mark of the second-half, but Gustavus slowly chipped away at the Augsburg lead and tied things up 63-63 with 8:17 to play. Neither team led by more than three points for the remainder of the game. A pair of Collin Olmscheid (JR, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) free throws put the Auggies up 75-74 with 1:46 remaining, but Augsburg was held scoreless the rest of the way as Gustavus claimed the MIAC win.
• The Augsburg offense was led by Olmscheid, who finished with 17 points, while adding a team-high eight rebounds.
Kevin McKiernan (SO, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) continued his hot streak for Augsburg, scoring 17 points, while adding three assists. This marks McKiernan's sixth consecutive game scoring in double figures.

• Also scoring in double figures for the Auggies was Harry Sonie (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) and Richie Perea (SR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS), who combined to shoot 10-of-16 from the floor. Sonie scored 13 points, while adding three rebounds and two steals, while Perea finished with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Chany Pal (JR, Fridley, Minn./Fridley HS) scored six points and pulled down seven rebounds, marking his fourth game this season with seven or more boards.
• Augsburg tied its second-best shooting performance of the season, hitting 54.5 percent (30-of-55) from the floor, while Gustavus connected on 54.4 percent (31-of-57) of its shot attempts.
• The Auggies claimed a 29-24 advantage on the boards, outscored the Gusties 34-26 in points in the paint and 24-14 in bench scoring.
• Unfortunately for the Auggies, they were only able to connect on 5-of-20 from three-point range, while Gustavus hit 9-of-20 from distance.


FOR THE FOES
• Gustavus finished with four players in double figures, led by Riley Sharbono, who scored 23 points and pulled down six rebounds.
• Benjamin Lies, hit 7-of-9 from the floor, for 14 points in 22 minutes of action.

• Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (1/7) at 3 p.m., traveling to Arden Hills, Minn. to take on Bethel University in a women's and men's doubleheader.
