MINNEAPOLIS -- Opening the scoring six seconds into the contest and cruising from there, the Augsburg University men's soccer team claimed a 6-0 nonconference win over Martin Luther College on Monday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 6, Martin Luther 0
LOCATION:Â Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS:Â Augsburg 7-7-1 overall, Martin Luther 5-9-0 overall
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies opened the scoring on their third touch of the ball in the game off the opening kickoff.
Aidan Sim-Campos (JR, St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS) tapped the ball to start, and it was played back to
Christian Metzger (JR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS), who launched the ball from midfield over the Martin Luther goalkeeper's head and into the net, just six seconds into the game.
• Sim-Campos then scored in the seventh minute, completing a two-player sprint with
Emmanuel Egbujor (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park HS). Egbujor eluded the keeper from the right side, and Sim-Campos finished the play for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
•
B.K. Kormah (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) scored for the Auggies in the 26th minute, taking a pass from Sim-Campos that was deflected by a defender and putting it home.
• The Auggies scored twice in a 1:54 span to open the second half, as
Luke Falk (JR, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) scored at the 47:09 mark, and Falk assisted on a goal at the 49:03 mark.
•
Erick Martinez (FY, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) capped the scoring with his first collegiate goal, a blast from 25 yards out on the right side in the 88th minute, off a long feed by
Nathan Bergstrom (JR, Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS).
• Augsburg outshot Martin Luther by a 23-13 margin in the game.
• In snapping a six-game winless streak (0-5-1), Augsburg had a chance to play nearly all of its active roster, as 25 players saw game action between nine and 62 minutes in the contest.
•
Thomas Molski (SR, Woodbury, Minn./North St. Paul HS) had two saves in goal in the first half, with
Garrett Kaelin (SO, River Falls, Wis./Hill-Murray HS) claiming three saves in the second half.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• According to the NCAA, Metzger's six-second goal is believed to be the fastest goal to start an NCAA men's soccer game so far this season (none quicker have been reported to the NCAA), and it is tied for the
fifth-fastest goal to start a game in NCAA men's soccer history, among all three divisions, and tied for the fourth-fastest in Division III history. The NCAA and Division III record is three seconds, set by Xavier Carty of Johnson & Wales (R.I.) on Sept. 17, 2016 against Norwich (Vt.).
FOR THE FOES
• Nathan Graumann had three shots in the game for Martin Luther.
• Caleb King had five saves in the first half for the Knights, with Gabriel Plocher collecting a save in relief in the second hafl.
QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "That's the first time I've seen a college team score from the opening kickoff live. I've seen a few clips from around the country, but that's for sure a first here at Augsburg."
• "We got a few things out of the game that we wanted to work on, and there were a few things we failed to accomplish, so all in all it was a good exercise."
• "We saw debuts from a few players and Erick got his first-ever collegiate goal. His lack of celebration was classic -- he realized as soon as he sent it toward the frame that he should have pulled it back to rebuild based on what we were trying to do at that moment. I am sure he will celebrate on his own later."
• "
Luke Falk influenced the game in a manner that is going to give us some options moving forward. When he moved up top, we were more efficient and threatening. He was active, clean on the ball, incisive with his passes, and he scored immediately."
• "Aidan was able to break his drought and was involved in three of the goals. I also thought
Brandon Sloniker was really effective tonight, and was extremely happy for him."
UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to MIAC play with a game at Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday (10/21) at 1 p.m.
