ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg University women's soccer team claimed at least a share of its second Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championship, after a 1-1, two-overtime draw at the University of St. Thomas on Wednesday afternoon.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 1, St. Thomas 1 (2OT)
LOCATION:Â UST South Field, St. Paul, Minn.
RECORDS:Â Augsburg 11-3-2 overall (7-1-2 MIAC), St. Thomas 11-3-2 overall (6-3-1Â MIAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
• With the draw, combined with second-place St. Olaf's (9-6-2 overall, 6-2-2 MIAC) 1-1 home tie with St. Catherine on Wednesday, Augsburg maintains a three-point lead in the MIAC standings with 23 points (three points for a win, one point for a tie), entering the final day of the regular season on Saturday (10/28), when the Auggies host the 20-point Oles at Edor Nelson Field. Saint Benedict (9-2-3 overall, 5-2-3 MIAC) entered Wednesday with a mathematical possibility of tying the Auggies and Oles for the MIAC regular-season title, but tied Macalester 0-0 on Wednesday, giving the Blazers 18 league points.
• By claiming at least a share of its second MIAC title in a four-year span (2014), Augsburg clinched a first-round bye in the upcoming six-team MIAC postseason playoffs. Augsburg will host a playoff semifinal game next Wednesday (11/1) at 2 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field. A win or tie on Saturday will give Augsburg the No. 1 seed, while a St. Olaf win will give the Oles the No. 1 seed and the Auggies the No. 2 seed, based on the head-to-head tiebreaker. Augsburg won the MIAC playoff championships in both 2014 and 2016.
• The Auggies took the lead in the 23rd minute, when
Ashley St. Aubin (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS) scored her conference-leading 15th goal of the season, an unassisted marker.Â
• St. Thomas tied the game on a goal in the 57th minute, and the teams played scoreless soccer the rest of the way.
• The Tommies outshot Augsburg by a 22-14 margin in the game, including a 10-7 advantage in the second half. The Tommies outshot the Auggies by an 8-5 margin in the 20 minutes of overtime.
• As has been the case most of the season, Augsburg split its goalkeepers in the draw, with
Emily Chapman (SO, Elburn, Ill./Kaneland HS) recording one save in the first half, and
Marissa Guillou (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) recording 11 saves in the second half and overtime. It's Guillou's third game with double-digit save totals this season.
•
Ciara Gregory (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) had six shots, including four on-goal, in the game, while St. Aubin had three shots.
Nora Edelen (JR, Middleton, Wis./Middleton HS) and
Jessy Wiskofske (JR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau West HS) had two shots each.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• St. Aubin's 15 goals, one off her MIAC-leading total of 16 goals last season, are the fourth-most in a single season in school history. Her 33 points (15 goals, 3 assists) are tied for sixth-most in a single season in school history.
FOR THE FOES
• Brielle Bierman tied the game at 1-1 with a goal in the 57th minute, assisted by Mallory DeBoom.
• Olivia Elvidge played the entire game in goal for the Tommies, collecting seven saves in goal.
QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH MIKE NAVARRE
• "Today's game was a great test for us. St. Thomas is experienced, organized, and athletic. Both teams had chances to win, and in the end, neither team would relinquish a defeat. We will use this as another opportunity to grow, and do what we can to prepare for what is certainly an exciting game against St. Olaf on Saturday."
